Starting & driving a Cat D8 from the 1950'ies

Some views of all the pedals and levers, some naughty Swedish words and
lots of engine sounds:

In case someone is building or planning on building an older D8

Apparently the pony motor needs some attention-
it also appears that the pony motor is both manual and electric start ?

Electric for the wimps,
hand cranked for the real men
He tried to do it the macho way but had to give up, cold can be brutal …

It’s good to see smiles while you work

When I stared my apprenticeship in the operators union we had old government surplus equipment at our training site. Since winter was the slow season we did our training then. Trying to crank those old pony motor equipped dozers and cranes was brutal. Not to mention working all those levers and pedals, add a scraper behind and you had three extra levers to work. Talk about a workout! Wayne

I was hoping you would see this Wayne - wa s the pony motor indeed both manual and electric start on equipment of this era ?

Depending on the years, most were manual. I don’t recall any electric ones, but I’m sure there were later conversions. Not sure when they did away with them. Wayne

In the video it appears that the operator is cranking the pony motor electrically - he has both hands down by the motor - or is it that the pony motor is running and he is engaging the big engine and that is what I hear cranking over ?

First he tried the “manly” way with hand-cranking,
then he said F-ck It! and started using the 6 volt
electric starter. The pony motor was very unwilling
even then, started and dies, started and died.
Once he had the pony running the big engine
roared to life without any fuss at all.
