I am aware that the StuG.III Ausf.A was soon replaced by the Ausf.B,
but wondered whether the earlier version was ever used during the
winter months on the Eastern Front. With this in mind, could it be
realistically depicted with a whitewash scheme over the base
dunkelgrau paintwork?

THe Stug III Ausf. A was used during the invasion of France in 1940; the B model was fielded during Operation Barbarossa in 1941.
On a side note; there is only one surviving Stug III Ausf. A in the world. Is at the Australia Armour and Artillery Museum in Cairns, Queensland, Australia.
As for paint? Yes; white wash over Dunklegrau would be correct. But I have yet to see a picture of a white washed Stug III B. Plenty of non-white washed pictures out there though.

SableLiger,
Thanks for the response. Yes, I am aware of the museum’s exhibit. From what I can see, the first two photos are of the Ausf.B version (evident from the drive sprocket design), the last photo appears to be an Ausf.A (again, with the earlier sprocket). I have yet to see an example of the Ausf.A in whitewash finish.
