Tank Gunfire Simulator Query

I am currently working on a 1/72-scale Chieftain Mk.5 (circa. 1979),
to be incorporated in a small diorama showing the tank on exercise.
Would this date be before the introduction of the ‘Hoffmann Tank
Gunfire Simulator’ system? If so, what would be fitted to the tank to
mimic gunfire in this situation?

Thanks,

Paul

Hi Paul
I’m not sure when the Hoffman came into service, but from what I recall I’ve mostly seen pictures of it on US & Bundeswher vehicles. UK vehicles were more likely to have Simfire then. The manual I have for that is from1973 - got it from Bovi

Mal,

That’s very interesting.
I wonder whether there are any clearer photos of the system mounted on the Chieftain.

Hi Paul
One or two…

On Chieftain there are 5 detectors mounted around the turret, mostly on the lifting eyes, cables go thru the Loaders periscope apeture. Sun shields were fitted to NZ, Australian & Singaporean ones, but not Brit ones.

Most of the pics I have are very close up B&W for Chieftain, showing the mountings. For Scorpion B& W but more overall. Have slightly fuzzy colour shots (non Hi Def) of M41 & AMX 13 mounted, and clear shots of Centurion & M113 mounted sets,
There is slight variation in positioning the various parts on each of the different vehicles.
