Round 2 are reissuing the old MPC Kits from the Disney film “The Black Hole”
I remember reading on the announcement they had adding some sections to the Cygnus to make the length more accurate.
I rewatched it over Christmas and it was a lot darker than I remembered. The ending was barking mad!
Right, they are reworking it for accuracy and to fix previous issues. I’m interested more in the Cygnus than the robots only because it is such a unique design compared to most spaceship models.
I wonder if it’ll be in clear or translucent plastic to aid with lighting? They did that with the reissues of the Enterprise-D and I think DS9.
It’s certainly unique. Definitely inspired by gothic architecture. Did they ever do the other ship in the range? I don’t remember the name of it at the moment.
Woohoo! I had a VINCENT and Maximillion and the other one as a kid and the relics still available are way too expensive. I am all over these things!
It was the USS Palomino. and yes, it came with the original kit. Tiny little thing.
So they never released a larger individual kit? This was a few years before I was born you see.
They were afraid of the repercussions of a miniature Ernest Borgnine.
Never had the ship; I was referring to the BOB robot. I did see a very nice large Cygnus model at IPMS Nationals this past year.
No , that I know of. just saw that a 3 D company ( Gambody ) has one in 1/64th. Looks interesting.
At one time I had 2 1/2 Cignus (picked them up at odd lots in the early 80’s for $2 each) but lost them a few years ago when I moved. ![]()
Probably one of those silly marketing decisions. Something along the lines of looks utilitarian, not as cool as the Cygnus, doesn’t have much screen time, therefore no one will buy it.
3D printing has definitely come to the rescue, but it’s out of a lot of people’s reach. I don’t have one or know anyone who does.
Gambody (https://www.gambody.com/) does have one, with interior. Gambody’s models are sometimes expensives, but with great quality!
Cults3D does have one too, but simpler (and cheaper) than the Gambody one: ✨ The Palomino Spacecraft for 3.75 IN (1:18) FIGURE Diorama・ STL File for 3D printing・Cults
Thingiverse does have one too, but much simpler than the previous ones: https://www.stlfinder.com/model/uss-palomino-t7cmZECq/5610641
Cygnus was specifically designed to be a cathedral in space. To me, it is in the same category of ships as Valley Forge but much less interesting. To me, it looks like some guy sketched a top view on a piece of paper, the model makers built this completely flat thing, someone said, “Oh, whoa, that looks really boring”, and so they stuck some towers on and stuff.
Palomino looks like a water tower. It is something of a throw back to very simple spaceship designs from earlier decades. The model maker did not even try.
54.99 Pounds for that old model! Yeesh. Well. Maybe I will pick a couple up for $5 US at Dollar Tree when no one buys them.
As you may tell, not a fan of The Black Hole. Terrible story. Terrible casting. Bad ship design. Really cool black hole effect! BOB, VINCENT, and Maximilian are okay. It would not take much to make all three of those and Cygnus really cool. Palomino. I would have fired the guy who proposed that one.
STOP BEATING AROUND THE BUSH, MAN!
Tell us you really feel about The Black Hole.
Will agree with you about the design of the Palomino looking at it again. It’s basically a bucket with rockets, but maybe that’s the aesthetic they wanted to go with. Something that looked simple and functional. A total mirror opposite of the Cygnus where the designer and modelers just went nuts! I don’t know, that’s just an idea. I still find it a strange omission not to include it in the original kit line, but maybe they didn’t sell well enough to expand it? I’m not sure I would part with a lot of cash for a 3D print myself.
The ending of the movie is utterly bizarre. I will give Disney credit for trying something more experimental and darker than they usually do, but yeah it didn’t quite work.
In fairness to the director, all sorts of people at Disney meddled with the project. The first cut was three hours long with a much more elaborate ending that took the Palomino through Hell and then Heaven. Kids cried and everyone else said, “uhhh, what?”, so it got chopped. Twice.
Big idea science fiction movies almost never work. What surprises me is that, with Star Wars right there to look at, Disney and Paramount both went cerebral instead of action.
I would enjoy watching a director’s cut of The Black Hole in original form. While the movie will never appeal to me for many reasons, I would like to see what the director was actually trying for.
Edit: I should add that, as a kid, having the Bob and Maximilian models, seeing the Cygnus in magazines and posters, I though they were all pretty cool, especially Maximilian.
Edit: I just read that Sigourney Weaver was originally considered for the role of Doctor Kate McCrae.
since they are re-releasing the “Black Hole” kits i am hoping they will do the same for the old Buck Rogers TV series as well
Whoa! Those Thunderfighters are expensive on eBay.
there are some 3D options out there but they’re not cheap either.
