The Old Moldy project - Tamiya M20 Armored Car

When I packed up all my models over 20 years ago, There was one kit I picked up somewhere and started to build, but when it came time to move, it was packed away and forgotten. And boy do I mean forgotten! A few years ago, I noticed that my conex, developed a leak and a few of my boxes I had stored in it was getting wet. So, of course I had to dig through everything and besides the stuff that was ruined, I found a long lost model I forgot I even had. The model? A Tamiya M20 Armored Car, in a very old and moldy box. I decided to put it with the growing stack of new models I’ve been purchasing and stashing for later.

So today, I am rained out of work, I decide to build my very first model in 20 yrs and I pick the M20.
I open the box and whoa! It’s covered in black mold. The nasty stuff! Umm, I gotta get this thing out of my shed! So I take it outside and begin rummaging thru the box. I find an old tube of Testors glue…dried solid. A couple of old envelopes containing car insurance bills due in 2004, the decal sheet, of course destroyed, and the instruction sheet. Faded, covered in mold but readable. I take a few pictures of the instruction sheet so I can build this thing without the danger of mold exposure. I take the sprues inside and drown them in bleach, then a rinse in hot water. Then I start to build.

Easy to get decal replacements on eBay. Hit up Scalemates for the instructions. Looks like everything was bagged and survived. I have both a Geyhound and an M20 in my stash.

This should help with the assembly instructions. Good luck and tagged; you’re it!

You can also get an Archer decal set for the instruments and placards.

You can look on eBay for a dry transfer set.

Get RID of anything with mould on that can’t be washed!

Yeah! I got rid of the box and every bit of paper. The model was soaked in bleach and rinsed in hot water.

Alrighty,I am done with it! It was a relearning experience, I hope you like it

It’s not my best work, but it will go with the rest of the collection anyway. I did look for decals on Ebay but I couldn’t wait, so I stole a couple of stars from a decal sheet from another model kit.

BTW I didn’t paint the OD body. This is the color the model was molded in. Although the picture doesn’t show it off too well, the molded color is pretty close to WW2 era Olive Drab. I just sprayed over it with dullcote and gave it a simple wash.
