Lamb you make a good point about transport in the desert. However there is still the issue of possible structural damage due to bumps and jarring of the trunyans (barrel pivots) and/or the elevating and slewing gears during transport.
I am surprised they did not also include a barrel lock-down at the rear of the 17cm porte. The towed flak 88 certainly had one, and the US 155mm had a massive one under the breech for support while towing.
Perhaps the 17cm was simply such a massive structure they did not have to worry about it breaking???
