I am coming along on my SdKfz 9/1, and I need suggestions on which color to paint the tracks, any and all help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Joel.
A few colors that work well as base for metal color in my opinion are..
- Tamiya Dark Iron LP-54 (lacquer)
- Tamiya Dark Iron XF-84 (hybrid acrylic)
- Gunze GSI Creos Dark Iron
…many other colors will work well with weathering etc.
But my favorite is Floquil Railroad Antique Bronze which is next to impossible to find now.

I actually paint mine black to simulate the protective lacquer from the factory then start weathering them down with rust tones and silvering where any metal might experience rubbing contact, and then start applying dust, dirt, and mud as appropriate to the specific setting.
The rubber pads will get painted in rubber or dark gray.
I do what brekinapez describes but want to try some alternate methods using acrylic paints to achieve different results for the sake of variety.
Starting with one or more metallic colors seems promising. Wade achieves some very nice results that look quite different from what I currently produce.
I wonder if black plus steel plus a touch of bronze would produce a nice, dark manganese steel.
I’ve used this but the subject model is no longer home. I need to resurrect this, as gun metal really isn’T accurate for track block or weapons!
Base
1 part Vallejo Metal STEEL
1 part Vallejo Metal COPPER
Then dry brush:
1 part Vallejo Metal SILVER
1 part Vallejo Metal COPPER
When used on crew-served weapons, it has a nice greenish hue w/o the dry brush.
I got this off the www a few years ago.
Some research, when at all possible, should be made to discover what metal the tracks were made of. This will determine the color of the tracks when new, and after rusting/oxidation.
