Trumpeter AS90 ... The load for a Commander

Finally got the bristles done … Very time consuming but I’m happy how they turned out … The donor paint brush was not so happy … But hey ho lol …
I still need to trim and shorten a few areas, then paint the green over the super glue spills and then paint the bristles very dark grey and / or rubber black.

Next up is the muzzle bag, then rust wash on the tracks and then the black cam.

Great job on the bristles John. I’m a bit late to this party, but another option is to combine what you and Olivier did. A small thin strip of styrene with the bristles glued onto that. Trim the bristles below the strip to length, so the bottom can move and trim right to the top of the strip. This top edge can be glued to the kit.

I did this using Woodland Scenics Field Grass.

It comes nicely packaged which makes it easy to lay strands in bulk, then tease off the excess before adding a bit more cyano to ensure it stays put. Easy to trim with scissors

That’s exactly what I did on the right hand sides part … If you look carefully you can see the white strip behind the bristles… It allowed me to use less and shorter lengths of bristle in one area…
I didn’t think about doing it until the very end :see_no_evil_monkey:

That looks really good Johnny and gives me more of an idea of what to do when I get around to starting my AS90. One area I might change is to use white glue instead of superglue, it should give me more time to adjust things as I’m bound to make a cows a**e of it.

If I was doing all again I would do the thin white styrene strip method like on the RH side and neat PVA. I found using superglue there was to much capillary action and the glue went into the bristles to much. I would also think about the woodland scenics field grass ( of which I have 3 packs :see_no_evil_monkey: ) as that is finer than some bristles :+1:
Also, if you havent got it already, I would recommend both PE sets for it as I actually used pretty much all of it on this - apart from the internal back door bits (any internal parts actually) and roof basket frame.

Since I am too lazy to check each post for the manufacturer reference …
Who made/makes that PE?

Eduard make both sets and RB make a cracking metal barrel and resin bellows set.

Also, if you really wanted to, you can build without the bellows being fitted, theres plenty of images of that out there.

I used Cyano Gel as it gives some time for adjustment and no capillary action. If I used PVA I’d just end up with PVA everywhere and bristles stuck to my fingers…

Did the muzzle bag… 3 pieces of plain tissue cut to size, and then brushed with neat PVA and applied one at a time and shaped.

And a spare PE securing strap once PVA had dried.

Bag was then painted Tamiya khaki drab and the strap painted NATO green

Black cam time next.

Black cam is on … Did it free hand and it turned out ok to me. Next up will be the final paint detail touch ups, adding the headlight lenses, their guards and then the Matt varnish.

It’s getting there …

Very nice indeed mate👌if it’s going on the back of your wagon though the winky pot has got to come off,it wouldn’t survive the first bridge it came across😂

Very good point mate … I am going to leave it fitted though just for a bit of visual colour to draw the eye … ( and I bet theres a few drop shorts who left it fitted and found a broken stalk with wires hanging out on the unload lol )

This is looking great Johnny, I’ve been following along in the background, I do have a question, but please ignore me if I have it wrong.
I’ve seen plenty of pictures of PzH2000 with the muzzle bag and they all have a reflector on the end of the bag, would that be the same for a British AS90?

Not done much research on the AS90 as it just falls outside my build era ie. upto 1991, M109A2 it has to be for me.

Hi mate, ref the PzH2000 - that may well be just a German thing or rather the muzzle bag designed for the vehicle with the reflective part incorporated into it, they are big on their safety aspects. UK ones dont have one, or not that I can ever remember seeing, its just a straight bag, nothing fancy.

Thanks for the info.

Now to get info on the M109 in British or Italian service, I’ll have to look for some ‘drop shorts’ for info although I don’t think I can get away with calling them that as I didn’t serve. However my grandfather was RHA during WWI, I have his cap badge and Great War medal. My dad was a pioneer in the Italian army 1948, clearing mine fields on the Yugoslavian border while being shot at from across the border.

Be good to that built … and nothing like clearing mines while being shot at …that will keep you on your toes !!

Was able to get decals on and a coat of Matt varnish (army painter rattle can)

This is going to be a very clean wagon… Ready for a display or demo… The weathering will be ultra light.

Once that’s done, it will be fitting it onto the trailer :+1:
