For the tires, I get resin would be better but I found this new technique that looks great and may work for you.
Another quick update, and a tip!
Before and after shot. Literally 2 minutes work with the foam end of the applicator, first with the Yellow, then with the Grey, to get a nice weathered look on the tyre!

Finished the weathering on the bogie assembly for the Reefer. I refined the application a bit as well. I used the foam pad on the applicator to apply an overall Grey tone to the rubber, then the brush end to lightly dust the whole thing with Yellow and then Orange Rust.
