Thanks for looking
Thank you for having a good look around. I imagined that those patrols must have been long and rough so anything that made the crew more comfortable would be a bonus.
A very finely kitted out vehicle. You’ve really done a great job with the scratch built parts- particularly the tarp which looks very natural in terms of its shape and thickness. The camo job on the cab is a nice addition too. Gotta love that frying pan and the cut of meat at the back of the truck!
The base reminds me of several photos of roads in Afghanistan that run beside rivers- the barren, elements battered look is effective.
Karl thank you for your positive comments. This river setting was a culmination of, as you said, many photos. The glacial fed rivers must have been cold but it brought the needed drift wood for this crew to stop and have a bite to eat and restock with wood for the cold evening ahead if they could have fires. It must have been a hard task to be set out in a relatively un armoured truck to face what ever they encountered. So many photos of convoys burning on mountain roads, the Mujahideen were a formidable adversary.
This is really well done. Somehow I missed it the first time around. Normally I would find the ham a bit of an odd thing to find on such a truck, but I know from experience such things were possible.
My team drove to Paktika Province in our Tacoma gun trucks escorting three Kamaz trucks laden with our beer and supplies. Somewhere in the dry lake bed near Gardez a ham must have fallen out of the back of one of the trucks.
I could always imagine some starving Afghan crawling through the desert who sees the ham ahead and starts shouting " Alhamdulillah!" until he discovers it’s a ham. Then he laments, “Allah! Why have you forsaken me?”
One of our terps loved ham. And of course they all drank alcohol. “Allah forgives us just as your God forgives you.”
