I am in the process of completing my 1/35 scale M4A2 USMC Sherman. At one time, I believe Verlinden had an after market cover for the hatches…I think they were known as “hen coops.” Does anyone know the correct name and (more importantly) where I can get a set?
Many thanks,
DJ
PERFECT! Many thanks
Be advised, the cages seen on Iwo Jima Shermans were NOT on M4A2s. They were on 4th Tank Battalion M4A3s and B Company, 5th Tank Battalion M4A3s. The only M4A2s on Iwo were with the 3rd Tank Battalion which had surprisingly little in the way of self protection mods on them. They were also all small-hatch M4A2s.
Currently working on a 1:1 M4A3 from B Company, 4th Tank Battalion on Iwo. It had the cages and like the rest of B Company’s tanks, it had additional cage material outboard of the drivers’ hatches.
Would it have the cover over the hull ventilator?
The 4th Tank Battalion tanks were a mix. They had some tanks like ours from the last batch of A3 75 VVSS tanks (s/n 62204) and so they did have vent covers. Our C/5th tank (s/n 49617) did not.
Where is this? Benning?
Currently at 29 Palms, headed back to Quantico soon.
I guess that makes more sense that Benning!
My current build is our B/4th tank as it appeared on Iwo. I’ve followed the weld scarring for the track block placement. B Company tended to have extended periscope hoods on the commander’s hatch, so they had taller cages as a result. I haven’t made one yet.
Looking great Jon.
Outstanding build, very sharp.
Like the details and it looks great.
So this Sherman is going to be on display at the National Museum of the USMC at Quantico? Next to “Genesis II”?
And this Sherman.
The Tucson Military Vehicle Museum has several tanks that were on loan from the Marines; most likely you rubbed elbows with them.
“Lucky” will be returning to NMMC this summer. The B/4th tank will be later this year or possibly early next year.
Loaned. Not donated. And yes, my colleagues out at Pima are outstanding individuals!
