USN Chrome Yellow

Which is closer to pre-40 USN Chrome Yellow? Vallejo 71.078 ( RLM-04/ ANA614/ BS356 ) or 71.135 (FS33655 / RAL-1003 )

You might be able to find some of the old Model Master line. They had Chrome Yellow. I don’t know if they had it in acrylic but I had a bottle of enamel.

Otherwise, I have no experience with the other two paints you mentioned.

I use Ammo Mig A.MIG-221 “FS 33481 Zinc Chromate Yellow”. In my opinion it’s the most accurate colour.

On 1930s USN aircraft upper wings? Totally different colors.

Anybody used Mr Paint stuff? Acrylic or lacquer? Their Chrome yellow looks pretty good.

Sorry sluff, I thought You say about interior colour.

Chrome Yellow is supposed to match FS 13655. Good old fashioned Testors square 1/4 oz. bottle Gloss Yellow is a good match. That is if you work with enamels.

Model Masters had 1707 which was listed as Chrome Yellow. Found 1 on evilbay … $10+shipping. FS number is allegedly 13538. 13655 (Blue Angels) yellow looks too yellow. (Close to Lemon yellow used for section bands and Lexington Air Group tail color) Chrome Yellow has an orange tinge. Mr Color makes a 13538 but it is lacquer. :face_vomiting: Mr Hobby has an acrylic but only find it out of Germany, with $16 shipping. (Seller in Italy hs it… $34 shipping.)

Oops, my mistake on the FS numbers. Chrome Yellow matches today’s Gloss Insignia Yellow. I used the Model Master stuff on my F2A-2.

I used Tamiya Gloss Yellow for the Lemon Yellow of the Lexington Air Group color.

Solved the yellow problem with my WIP B-339 …

That looks good. What I’ve read though the yellow on the wings was a bit more orange. Also, seems the AAC used a different shade than the navy did… :face_with_symbols_over_mouth:

These are digitally restored original color pre war photos. On the TBD the difference between the Chrome Yellow and Lemon Yellow is rather minimal. But the worn, faded, and weathered deck Chrome Yellow markings are quite noticeably different from the well maintained wing colors

The USN and USAAC yellow wings color was certainly different, with the AAC shade supposedly having the more orange hue than the USN color.
