VAB uparmoured Mali

Another recent build that I completed and brought to our local model show.
Heller VAB, scratch armour plate and other details. Blast resin, Eduard PE. I couldn’t have done this without help from "Frenchy, thank you.

Thanks for looking I appreciate it.

Some French vehicles are weird and ugly, but that’s a good looking truck and a great model of it.

For those who would like to give a try at building the venerable Heller VAB kit, it has recently been re-released with Ukrainian markings…But be prepared to spend time and money on it (just ask Bill  )

It is a shame that Heller didn’t fix anything, the vehicle is still in service albeit with many modifications over the years. Frenchy is right, this build costs a huge amount of time and money to correct all the wrongs. Blast Models has done a great service to make available resin replacements, they are of exceptional quality and fit but expensive.
Without your help with references this would have been an even more difficult model to build, thank you.

Hey Boggie,
what didi you use to make the sun protections above the 0.50 turret and the rear hatch?
Would you care to share some more pictures, in particular showing the build steps for these?
Thanks in advance for your answers.
Cheers

I used 2 part epoxy for the sun shades. I rolled it very thin and pressed fabric into it to give it the texture then I applied it carefully to the mesh screen which was from Aber. As it set up I modeled the edges and pushed the resin further into the screen.I didn’t take many pictures as I built the VAB but if you ask specific questions I might be able to explain things. There are many older builds and builds of other versions on the internet as well photographs of every imaginable vehicle inside and out. My problem was to settle on which one to do.
Here is a photo of the up armoured panels I made. Basically I used Tamiya tape and pressed it onto the Heller hull and used a fine marker to outline the hull panels. Lots of looking at specific vehicles determined where the panel lines were scribed and individual panels were cut out. All the panels are the same thickness so be careful.

Thanks for your interest

Very nice.
I won’t have to worry about the up armour panels as I managed to get a hold of the blast kit…
I’ve got three VAB in project (2 from Heller and one from Azimut).
The Heller ones will be French.
One from Afghanistan period.
dsc03112

One ULTIMA (latest standard).
unnamed

I’ve started prep work on the Azimut (aging full resin kit); it will be a Lebanese army variant that has a very specific 0.5 central turret that was localy deigned and produced.

The paint job will be chalenging for that one…
I’ll keep you posted.
Cheers

FrenchmanRdV134, you don’t mind a challenge. Part way through my build I wanted to do the Ultima. I have most of the Blast resin for it including the RWS but I just didn’t have the the will to go through another Heller hell. I may take a breath and like it all over again but I’ll need the base kit. I do have the 8 wheeled version with the Eduard PE but I won’t be building that. Keep me posted I’d love to see how you get on with these.

You bet I have … but thanks for the waring
