The photographs suggest some light color, but I don’t’ specifically know what it is.

Thomas, I presume you are referring to the French Army and Foreign Legion in your question. The answer is yes, they did. I’m not at all sure about specific units, but the Legion’s motorized units used Dodge 4x4s, 6x6s, jeeps,M8 armored cars and other vehicles. Algeria is mostly dessert but very diverse at that. The sandy regions in the south were where several Legion motorized units operated. Here are some pics:
