Viking Adventure

Greetings all.

When master Young released this figure a couple months ago, I was intrigued, but confused. The bust was mostly shield, with only the head, hands, and one arm of the figure visible.

The pose was interesting. A warrior hiding behind his shield, but without a lot of body or uniform to see.

I was also confused by his visible two hands, how was he holding the shield?

So, I almost passed on him, but then my imagination took over. I pictured the young Viking aboard a long ship. Where the shields were mounted along the gunwales to protect the crew from attack.

And to add to the story, a couple of arrows fired by some foe, were evidence of the need to shelter.

The concept also gave me a chance to build a unique base for the figure. Another hobby is woodworking. Building the base was an enjoyable component. I chose walnut for the planks, for its beauty, not for realism.

As the bust included a cut-off shield, I had to complete it. Adding the bottom quarter to produce a complete, round shield.

For the first time I used a (new) Archer, eyeball decal set. I’m old and my own eyes, even with an Optivisor, aren’t always up to the task. I think they work…

The skin was painted with artist oils, while the rest was painted in acrylics.

This is the result. What do you folks think?

You may know that I mostly build 1/35 armor dioramas, but I paint larger figures and busts for a change of pace and to enhance my skills.

Nicely done Ralph! The wood texture is particularly well done! Interesting subject too, and one we don’t see enough of. Thanks for sharing!

Thanks Sam. The wood is real, walnut.

Excellent vignette & painting Ralph, and very imaginative too.

This takes nothing away from your interpretation, I was curious about the nose-protector and helmet shape because it reminded me of…

Maybe the Vikings invented the nose-piece (?) and certainly the Normans were recently descended from Vikings. But I noticed Young calls this figure “The Northman” rather than The Viking – just wondering if (given he’s Korean) he meant “Norman”, especially as the shape of the shield could be interpreted as the long type rather than circular?

That is a wonderful depiction of this bust- an inspired creation. The painting on the figure itself is awesome and that shield is a a real attention grabber too with a great design.

Martin, I pulled from this web sight https://vikingage.org/index.php/Domed_Helmets

They indicate the nose-piece was definitely in use by the Vikings, prior to 1000AD

Good question…

That same web site, along with a couple others, by the way, hint that my shield painting may involve a little ‘creative license’. The Vikings’ decorative shield painting wasn’t usually so elaborate.

Thanks for the response.

Beautiful work! And yes, the nose piece is definitely correct, although the helmet appears to be one piece, meaning it was “raised” from a single piece of metal, which was unusual, especially the nose piece. That type of construction would be late Viking period—as far as we know. Those old smiths were more skilled than archaeology generally admits! As for the shield design, it’s perfectly possible.

“Northmen” was a generic name for Norwegian, and Danish Vikings (they were both a single kingdom for a period). “Norman” derived from “Northmen”.

I almost confused the young fellow for a “Shieldmaiden” :scream:  ! Maybe a slight 5 o’clock shadow would define his masculinity! :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

Yes, the conical helmet with nasal was a common helmet style for this period, & well into the High Middle Ages as well. Also the helmet might not necessarily be forged by a scandinavian smith. Many Viking era swords were FREX made in France. This helmet could have been looted off the battlefield, or purchased through trade. They could be found from as far west as England & neighboring territories, to as far east as at least Poland. It could be found as far south as both Spain & Italy as well.

He identifies as a warrior.

There’s an argument for Shield Maidens being warriors as well!

 :canada:

Do you have a thing for shield maidens?

I believe in gender equality; at least when it comes to naked female berserkers…
There are a few candidates amongst this lot, but mostly overdressed (and only 28mm).

Cheers,

Which one identifies as SWMBO?

Nicely done!

Alright, I give up. How do you shade a five-o’clock shadow on a blond dude?

Yeah…they’re HOT! Especially Lagertha! :smiling_face_with_three_hearts: :face_savoring_food:

 :canada:

It works best as a pre-shade. Light gray where beard and moustache are, then lighter coats of skin tone over it.
