Waffen SS camouflage

Hello everyone.
I’m in the process of painting some Waffen-SS figures for my Normandy Diorama. I bought this set:

Never painted Waffen-SS Soldiers before and i dont even know what Uniform that MG-Gunner is wearing. My research was not successfull.
So my question:
What is that MG-Gunner camouflage called? And maybe someone has some reference pictures

any help is appreciated.

cheers

I think that’s meant to be Italian camo - “mumble something” mimetico?

The Machine Gunner as well as the soldier to the left of him are wearing Italian camouflage suits. I believe it was called Telo Mimeteco. It was popular with the German Army. Good luck in your figure painting and put up some pics when you can.

If you google it you should find numerous pics online.

In brief; when Italy surrendered to the Allies in 1943, SS troops invaded. Italian military was fair game and warehouses were raided of much Italian camoflage material, as well as leather submarine uniforms, and aviation jackets.

I think the word you’re looking for is “Telo Mimetico” (Camouflage Cloth). The official designation was M1929 camouflage.

This will help; it includes the Italian camouflage versions as well:

Relatively easy to find and reasonably priced (after a quick search on the www).

Reynier, I believe that top pic is actually the post war Italian camouflage.

The WW" version was this (albeit this one is quite worn and faded):

(Filched off the www)

Not to score points I hasten to add.

Well? They did have two variants of the “Telo Mimetico” - one variant in 1940, and another one in 1960…

This tunic is post WW2, the shades are different - you have to also take into consideration that Germans used both Italian made and German made uniforms, so there could be some color shade differences between them.

For sure post your work, I’d be interested in seeing these painted- a nice, dynamic set of figs hustling with all their equipment- should make a good scene. Best of luck with the painting.

Even prior to that troops in the Med… mostly officers … had “custom” uniforms made up with Italian camo material. Fallshirmjager Panzer Div. Herman Goering had a fair amount.

That’s Kurt “Panzer” Meyer, took over as GOC of 12SS “HJ” after Fritz Witt was killed. Right looks like Wilhelm Monke, not a very savoury character, commanding SS Panzergrenadierregiment 26. Not sure about the guy on the left, but likely Erich Olboeter, commanding III/SS PZGR 26. This dates the photo to post July 1944, when Monke and Olboeter received their Knights Crosses for actions in Normandy. Olboeter is also wearing the EK1 and German Cross in Gold, a fairly rare decoration, intended to bridge the gap between the EK1 and the KC. He is also wearing the jacket of the Field Grey version of the Panzer clothing, buttoned up to the neck, for Panzerjager or Sturmartillerie crews, despite being an infantryman, which illustrates how lax rules were at the time.
