I want to know what colour of paint was used on British and American tanks specifically their undercoat?
was it yellow or oxide red or perhaps other colours depending on the metal being painted?

According to Roy Chow from AMPS, it was red oxide primer. Here is a link to a thread on FSM where he re read his source material.
which makes sense when you think about it as most US vehicles were built by railroad or automobile manufacturers. Yellow green/Zinc Chromate primer was used in the aircraft industry. I believe that ship builders also used red oxide primer on the metal components. Probably a standard primer used by the steel industry.
