Where Was The Land Rover Pink Panther Actually Deployed?

Lol always a good thing when you don’t have to clean something! I can attest to that lol!

With respect to the 66, are you referring to the M72 LAW?
And you are right ; the pictures don’t show a lot of kit being carried on these vehicles. I guess only mission essential. Makes sense.

I now hesitate to buy one of the extra gear sets from legends etc, because the real ones didn’t seem to carry much. Those sets are loaded with gear.

I think sometimes firms just produce stuff as they know it will get bought and invariably modellers will bung it all on, whereas sometime … once again … less is more

Thats correct, I think it was called Rocket 66mm HEAT - that was then replaced by the LAW 80 in the 80’s

Richard, the Live Resin one is an M3 version, the Brits used the M2 and designated it L14A1 Gun, 84mm, Infantry Anti-Tank. It shouldn’t be that difficult to scratch I suspect apart from the conical effect required for the venturi. Firing Line (DJ Parkins) however, do one in white metal which with a few tweaks would do nicely I would have thought.

Ok thanks I’ll look into that

Just a futher thought: unless you wish for the Carl Gustav to be fully displayed - the blokes checking their kit or readying it for firing for example - to be honest it’ll just be stowed amongst all the other gear and may not be discernible as such. A small length of plastic tube painted green partially obscured with whatever else takes your fancy might suffice. As I say, just a thought.

That said, the Firing Line kit isn’t hugely expensive.

Yes I thought about that too, thanks again.

I bet that sniper got the biggest surprise of his (very short) life …

In my view LAW 80 was pants, far too heavy and the arming sequence too complex. I was dicked as the troop Charlie G man when we re-rolled as infantry for a Cyprus UN tour with 4/7 Dragoon Guards in '87 'cos I’m a big bloke. Fun to fire but felt like being hit with a shovel in your back.

Making them tow gensets seems to add insult to injury

Does anyone know if there were Series III Pink Panthers? All the pics I have ever seen are Series IIa.

Sometimes I open up a can of worms. I happened to buy two kits of the old Tamiya kit (on the cheap) and wondered why the vehicle had a reasonable amount of fame, but I hardly heard information about what it was used for. Incidentally I thought Land Rovers had weak engines so they could not be loaded heavily.

There are one or two Series III ‘SAS’ landrovers doing the rounds of the MV enthusiast shows but they are fakes as far as I’m aware - the Regiment went straight from the Series IIa Pinkies to the 110 DPV in the mid-80s.

The Pinkies were specialist vehicles with non-standard bodies that could be (and were) upgraded over their lifespans. They were maintained to a very high standard so there was little need to develop a Series III version for any marginal improvement on the same basic chassis. The DPV was a step-change, not least because of the coil spring suspension and the larger load bed.

On a side note, one of the pictured Landies is a mine-protected one, similar to this one :

Very interesting information here as well as great pictures too. Thanks to all

Thanks John thats what I suspected from the photos that are out there.

I think this is a great thread, the Tamiya kit is on my build list too and there’s some awesome info here.

Yeah your probably right, it was one those seems like a good plan at the time, but after a while, the “pants” issues start to creep in.
