Why are Israeli tank barrel tips painted black?

Hey folks, so across my neverending hunt for reference pictures, I noticed something odd.
It seems that almost every single Israeli tank has the tip of its barrel painted black:

obviously this isn’t soot (which I read is already exaggerated usually, and barrel tips are rarely significantly darkened?), it’s deliberately painted black
This is opposed to most other tanks out there:

Though interestingly, this Challenger 2 also has its barrel tip colored black:

And I’m sure there are other non Israeli tanks that do this But since it’s not widespread, I just wondered why?
Whether Israel or other countries, why are barrel tips sometimes painted black? Is it only under specific circumstances?
This will help me (and others, I hope) know when to paint their own barrel tips black

Thank you in advance!

Maybe it is just a “fashion”?

Looks cool?.

Barrel cleaning to remove soot and deposits could result in dirty and greasy hands getting the barrel tip all “untidy and horrible”. Painting the barrel black all the way back to some easily recognised line would make the stains less visible which would make it easier for the crew (less work).

I’m pretty sure British gun barrels are finished in black anyway, and have been for some years. Due to the thermal sleeve the tip is the only piece that gets noticed.

Maybe to help the tankers see the end of the barrel easier in the desert conditions? A tan colored barrel tip in the desert would be hard to see.

Is “looks cool” a justifiable reason in the armored corps? XD
And hmm, sounds plausible!
Though, I do wonder if the presentably of the tank’s barrel is that much of a concern

Hmm I see, the IDF armored corps did take a lot after the British, but then that leaves me wondering about the guns lacking a thermal sleeve :face_with_monocle:

That sounds quite plausible! Maybe a way to distinguish the tan barrel from the tan desert when looking out the sights!

Not my army so I’ll leave those judgments to you

The Artillery Corps also paints the M109 blast deflector black . And during the 80’s they had in some cases a white stripe painted on top which was a visual aide for direct fire of the shoot and scoot variety..

I think that they are painted black to make soot traces less visible.

Curious, I decided to ask ChatGTP, and this is what it had to say;

The black paint on the tips of Israeli tanks, particularly on the barrel and the turret, is a distinctive feature that serves a few practical purposes. Here’s why it’s done:

1. Camouflage: The black paint helps break up the silhouette of the tank, especially the barrel and turret, which are often the most visible parts of the tank. In battle, the sun or moonlight can create glare on metallic surfaces, making tanks easier to spot. The black color helps to reduce this reflective surface, making the tank less visible to enemies, especially when in open terrain or during night operations.
2. Thermal Signature Reduction: In modern warfare, many armies use infrared sensors to detect the heat signature of vehicles. The black paint can help to absorb more heat, preventing the tank’s surface from reflecting excessive sunlight or thermal radiation, which could make it stand out on thermal imaging systems.
3. Aesthetic/Tradition: Over time, the black tip has become a characteristic feature of Israeli tanks, particularly the Merkava series, and it has taken on a bit of a symbolic or traditional meaning. For soldiers and veterans, it can also signify a particular pride or identity associated with Israel’s military.
4. Identification: The black tip can make it easier to identify Israeli tanks on the battlefield, helping friendly forces distinguish their own vehicles from enemy ones.

In short, while the black paint on the tips of Israeli tanks serves a functional role in camouflage and reducing visibility, it has also become a distinctive feature and a part of military tradition.

Of course a guess by AI is about as relevant as a guess by any of us, though I would lean to the belief that maybe the reason the tip of the barrel is black, is psychological. Knowing that Israeli tankers don’t miss, watching that big black tip being pointed in your direction, radically raises the pucker factor to the top of the scale

I wonder how visible that black tip would be from half a mile away?
The whole turret turning would be more obvious …

True, the turret turning thing would be more obvious, but my guess is if an opponent was watching the turret turn, that black muzzle end may exaggerate the appearance of the gun being pointed at them and the bore lining up for the shot. -especially if they are viewing this through their own optics. As mentioned, Israeli tankers don’t miss and the last place an opponent wants to be is wherever that black tipped barrel happens to be pointed. Thats my guess which is as good as any other guess.
