I’ve watched it a few times. It’s gory and it’s stupid… but I still find it entertaining… if I’m in the mood for that sort of thing.
I don’t watch splatter movies but I guess this creeps into that genre.

The film battleship, made in 2012.
Yes I just watched that movie a few weeks ago, not very good.
Probably ruffle a few feathers, but Top Gun. Awful, clichéd Hollywood BS. I outright refuse to watch the sequel which just strikes me as wee Tom’s egotistical fantasy.
Troy (2004). The “book” was much, much better.
For anyone who hasn’t read it, I highly reccomend the translation by Robert Fagles. And don’t skip the introduction. It is masterfully written.
Well, in it’s favour it has some good F/X and Dina Meyer (Denise Richards too, but she doesn’t remove her clothing). The two sequels don’t have anything like those (the third does have Jolene Blalock).
Cheers,
M
What, they made more? They must’ve been straight to VHS!
Just a couple of counterpoints
Top Gun and Maverick, pure Hollywood-yes, corny and cliche-yes, but fun and entertaining thats all, didnt take them serious, especially back in 86,those carrier shots and jet footage were hot, reinforced my model building.
Troy,hokey story,hammed up,love story,but liked the cast,and thought the epic battle scenes were good.Again not serious,but fun.
Gods and Generals way short of Gettysburg, but thought Fredericksburg and Chancellorville were well done.
My bads
Pearl Harbor
Green Berets
Alamo-John Wayne
Back to Bataan
Iron Eagle
Yep. Starship Troopers 2: Hero of the Federation and Starship Troopers 3: Marauder - the latter even having Casper Van Dien back as Johnny Rico: Yes, it’s that bad. Apparently there are another two computer-animated sequels (so bad real live people refused to appear in them?); Starship Troopers 4: Invasion and Starship Troopers 5: Traitor of Mars…
Cheers,
M
I hear ya Stephen. Strictly entertainment nothing more. There were a few cool carrier shots but that’s it. Sequel was even worse.
Not sure if anyone mentioned it but Battleground was one of my favs growing up.
The 1970’s Midway movie was pretty awful. A lot of big names but bad production values. It contains my all time favorite example of bad film editing when Charlton Heston’s character takes off in one type of plane, flies to the target in another type, attacks in a third type, flies back in a fourth type and finally crash lands in yet another type! Although the film had already ‘crash landed’ much earlier as far as I was concerned!
Regards, Bob
Admittedly I was probably a bit harsh, it’s entertaining I will grant it that and the sequel definitely got people and money back into the cinemas after covid. But it is pure nonsense.
Without it though, we wouldn’t have had Hot Shots (which I still regard as the better movie. It’s a comedy by intent and it has Gnats!) and Ace Rimmer in Red Dwarf. So there’s that going for it.
Sorry I put this in the wrong place, should be best movies not worst ugh!
I completely agree. My Dad (sadly gone now) was there, and I have his very down to earth stories of what it was really like, to give me my own little historical window on how it was for him. I could screenplay a better version I reckon!
I say 1989 Firebase Gloria is horrible.
Reading interviews with the director and screenwriters you’d find there was a deliberate move away from Heinlin’s book. They wanted to emphasis the militarized state and how fascism can be accepted readily for the “common good” so there’s a subversive message, if you will, that the book didn’t dive into as much. I enjoyed both the book and the movie but I treat them as distinct works with a similar foundation. When you hear people in the US talking about tossing out parts of the Constitution then some of the movies message strikes a little more closer to home, at least for myself and many others that set it apart from the book.
My vote for worst war movie goes to Pearl Harbor.
Oh, damn!! I forgot to mention that film. I have watched about 50 times when I was a kid and I wanted to become fighter pilot. And around 1 month ago I have watched it again. And yes, is still horrible. The ‘talking display’ makes me LOL, and now, 30 years later, LOL more and more!!
Pure Hollywood film, but as Anthony said, those carrier shots along the Top Gun Anthem theme are terrific!!! And why not to say: Kelly Mcgillis. Now, that movie aged badly.
I went to Maverick’s premier and the first thing I loved was the beginning, just like the old movie. And then, the in-flight shots are amazing. But still a Hollywood movie.
The music was good though
