1/35 Academy+Legend M1151 GMV Diorama

Hi all

Well, after more than a year of on and off work, I think I can call this diorama done!

This build wasn’t inspired by any particular photos or anything like - tbh the reason for this build is that I really like the Humvee, especially all the SF/GMV variants. I’ve actually built a few of these before but as my skills have (somewhat) improved, new aftermarket has come out and 3D printing has come along, it was time for another build! And also time for the first problem - the Tamiya M1025 and M1046 appear to be out of production. This was a problem because 1) the Legends SF GMV conversion I wanted to use was made for that kit, and 2) most reference pics I have show that the trucks without doors were almost exclusively M1025 based. The door point is important because these trucks are full of comms equipment, crew modifications, weapons, stowage etc and I wanted to be able to see all that.

Alas, I couldn’t find any Tamiya kits for a reasonable price and didn’t have the patience to wait anymore, so I bough the Academy M1151 and the Legends SF GMV conversion kit and grabbed the saws, files and sanding sticks. A small point on accuracy here - there are M1151 (or M1165) based GMVs in use and I have plenty of images showing them. But as far as I can tell they all have their doors on, and most have up-armoured beds and turrets. This makes sense because why use the up-armoured M1151 or M1165 as a base only to remove the doors. So while I’ve tried to keep the diorama as accurate as possible, the starting point is not accurate as far as I know.

The Academy kit and Legends set don’t provide everything I had in mind for this build so I used a lot of aftermarket (new & from the stash) and 3D printed parts myself from various STLs from Cults3D. Here is a (likely incomplete) list:

Painting was done with a mix of MRP, Tamiya, Vallejo and Abt. 502 paints

Ok that’s enough words - here are the photos!

And some details shots:

Here you can see the Quinta interior set, scratch built pedals and underneath of the dash, and all stowage crammed into the back

The rolled up tarp on the back was made from Magic Sculpt (first time using this - amazing stuff!) and whilst it was soft I pressed in the ratchet strap and other straps for the jack. Also you can just make out the tiny padlock on the chest - this is a 3D printed item from Cults3D.

Here’s a shot of the bed showing the ammo boxes, water and MRE boxes, Igloo cooler, packs and bags and other stuff the crew would need

More details like spent shell casings and links, half filled Coke bottles, and hanging backpacks. Also visible are the 3D printed 7.62 boxes with lifted handles through which the straps have been fed - again I am amazed by 3D printing!

Wouldn’t be Afghanistan without poppies!

Garbage that’s often seen in my references - the chair and bottle are 3D printed and the sandbags are scratch built

All the figures have been painted with Vallejo Acrylics and Abt. 502 oils for the faces

The US flag in the windscreen is an old Archers Transfers item. The wiper blades were also scratchbuilt as the kit parts are poorly detailed

The for not legal reason “Pringles” can is from Accurate Armour

The camera is again a 3D printed item with a lead foil strap - painted up to look like a Nikon!

The MK 18. is a purchased 3D printed item (very impressive detail here!) while the bungee cord is scratchbuilt

After a year of this being on the bench, I am glad to have it done and ready for something else! Thanks for looking!

Excellent work. Love the details. The little nuances, like the water bottle counterweights on the aerial and the trash and resin water puddle.

Welcome to the forum. This project is a very nice introduction. I like the way your water cans are different colors. Excellent work!

You have gone to town on this build Anirudh! There’s some cool little detail everywhere you look- the doritos, the coke bottle, the weight on the rear axle, the straps on all the various bits of kit and equipment stowed on the vehcile and the nicely placed elements of bright colors here and there to draw the eye in and around the scene.

Thanks guys - appreciate the comments!
@SableLiger Glad you like it - I tried to balance the detail with realism without going overboard

@18bravo Cheers Rob! - Actually I was on Armorama before the forum moved over. Which is where I bought one of your reference CDs for GMVs many years ago. And it’s still useful!!

@Karl187 Thank you Karl! There are so many cool photos out there showing all the details the crews have added to their trucks and it was a real effort not to try and add them all - probably why it took me so long!

Further reinforcing my claim - the best builds come from the best references!

Oustanding built ! I like the sand shade color.

With a huge list of elements used. Congrats.

Did the Legend parts fit the Academy kit ?

Thanks @Spearhead01 Glad you like it

@Terminator Thanks! Yes I did have a lot of this in the stash but still bought more :man_facepalming: Still at least I have spares!

The Legends parts mostly fit the Academy kit - some of the interior and comms parts fit quite well. The rear bar that supports the roof needed widening to fit correctly. Most of the rest is stuff for the bed and doesn’t have any issues fitting.

In looking at this again, I notice another detail I don’t recall seeing anywhere else - the grey windbreaker worn by SF. (Rear of gun truck) Did the Live Resin figure come that way or did you modify it? 100% legit.

Thank you all - really appreciate the comments! Glad you like the diorama. Really makes all the time with this thing sat on the bench worth it!

Yeah, I’m highly impressed! Looks like its about time to hang up my apron. Outstanding work.

@corsutton :grin:

@18bravo The guy in grey was something I added after I saw a few photos of guys in grey windbreakers and also some in grey fleeces(?).

The LR figure is unmodified - it’s this one: US Army Special Forces Gunner (1 figure w/2 heads) & Heavy Weapon Mount, Live Resin LRM-35015

Ah. I remember that one now. I even commented on it.

I used to share quite a few photos and measurements with Yaroslav, including measurements for those turrets. In fact, I’m not quite sure when I stopped. Who knows - maybe he combined photos of the gunner in grey windbreaker with gunner smoking a cigar to come up with it.

Early on we wore a dark blue, almost black fleece.

There would be some overlap between those and the new issue items, which included the grey windbreaker and pants, but all of the new fleece underneath was coyote brown. You can see some of it peeking out from under my windbreaker in the night time photo.

The model looks great. It is clear that you have put a lot of work and additions into it. The figures are elegant. It is good that you mentioned that the vehicle is not inspired by any specific photos. The GMV M1165, despite the M1151 base, does not have its sides armoured in this way. If my memory serves me right, there is no M1151 GMV (without the doors and with the extra armouring). The M1165 GMV has 2 basic variants- with all doors and a built-up rear, and with doors (half). The photos show both versions.
