1/35 Arnhem bridge diorama WIP

About two years ago i attempted to make a part of the Arnhem bridge in hopes of recreating a painting I had found online. I decided to retry this diorama. If you remember, the bridge was an A for effort but let’s be honest, it was atrocious. Recently i found someone online that could recreate part of the bridge that i had once tried to build. Luckily they were able to 3D print it for me in 1:35 and now im back at it again.
I’ve attached my old forum build log below.

Also, I’ve attached the painting I’m attempting to replicate.

Finally here is my starting point.

There will be some more use of milliput and sanding. Luckily my Tiger and Jeep made it through my last move intact. I’m also taking suggestions for other things to add to the bridge.

Looks like a good start. Can’t wait to see the bridge superstructure. As for additions, are you planning to add any of the debris from Grabner’s 9SS Aufklarungabteilung attack, bulldozed to the side?

@Hohenstaufen unfortunately there won’t be the arching superstructure. That would have been a tough print in itself. I will have the side railings that were on the bridge tho.

I had thought about doing some debris from the column but I’m not sure what would be appropriate to put as debris. Would there be debris on the southern side of the bridge?

That’s a very ambitious project Gregory and one that is near and dear to my heart. I’ve been a big fan of the Arnhem Battle ( obviously from a modeling and historical point of course) and Airborne subjects in general; and want to do a diorama with this subject but haven’t gotten around to it with the myriad of other projects in the line. I’d love to see how your project turns out. Many years ago, a friend of mine named Dan Capuano did an Arnhem scene and it was phenomenal. I’ll try to dig out some pics. Good luck!

A long time ago I took part in building a 1:72 diorama of the bridge which was shown in the Airborne Museum Hartenstein in Oosterbeek. If I recall correctly it has been removed while the building was renovated and displaced…

@metalhead85 the Arnhem battle is always a great subject to study. It’s something near and dear to my heart as well. Airborne battles always seem to take their on their own uniqueness.

One of my dream dioramas would be either Grabners column on the other end of the bridge before the fight as they form up or even part of it passing the house that Frost commanded the battle from.

@golikell that’s a magnificent diorama. Really beautiful i wish i could see it in person.

I hope it is still there, but as said: I think that someone told me it got lost somehow… I am trying to figure this out…

@golikell sounds like it was re aquired into a personal basement

I was very fortunate to see all of Dans work in person at various model show over the years and they are incredible in their scale , detail and most of all workmanship. His stand alone figures were amazing.

@Tojo72 @metalhead85 thank you.luckily for me this will be more of a building build rather then building all the kits for months. Luckily i already have the tiger and Jeep. I am entertaining more vehicles but i need to see how much space is taken up once everything is set. I’m entertaining the idea of more figures. Maybe like the scene when they march over the bridge in columns.

@golikell thank you, this is one of those thank god for 3D printing moments I’ve had. I’m honestly excited to get this thing together. The nice part is that it’s a quick build. It’s the painting that I’ll take some time on it.
I’m thinking of an ochre color paint on the bricks. I’ll do variations of grey and a Payne’s grey wash on the bridge and highway portion.
I’ll do another resin pour of maybe a half inch or so to practice water effects around the bridge.

Amazing diorama is all I can say. You could look at it for hours in the details.

Absolutely. Many of his dioramas were like that- big with lots of action and figures.
