1/35 Dieppe Churchill Diorama Finished

Quite pleased with how this diorama turned out. I had a lot of first time moments on it and can proudly say I’m excited to continue building and learning on this modeling journey. I have attached the build log below but a quick rehash. I used AFV clubs dieppe Churchill for the build. The kit is overall quite nice and goes together with few issues. The beach was made with sand that was scaled to replicate the shingle pebbles of dieppe beach. I used four different variants of grey to achieve the proper beach color. This is my first real resin pour and it humbled me. Besides losing half of the first pour to the build table i was able to learn quickly and make adjustments, the water is colored with vallejo blue and i believe vallejo green from its kriegsmarine vallejo air set .For the water effects i used interactives resin waves and foam for final touches.

I’d like to thank everyone that helped with the creation of this and aided with reference material. Your help and guidance was greatly needed.

What did you finally pick for the stones on the beach?

https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B09P4B9Z2M?psc=1&ref=ppx_pop_mob_b_asin_title

Was easy to work with. Only issue is i have 9 pounds of it still.

Next 1:35th scale diorama: an LCT (2) at Dieppe:

OK, OK, those are rather hard to get hold of, so if you don’t feel like scratchbuilding you could go for an LCA instead, which you can buy from Gecko:

Wait, hang on … Did I really just say “if you don’t feel like scratchbuilding” in relation to Gecko’s LCA? Scratch that idea, then …

@Jakko nit gonna lie, i almost bought the minute Dingo scout car that had jubilee decals to do another dio with. The LCT would be a fun build, could possibly 3D print a portion of the hull and ramp. I’ve found LCA landing craft in 3D print that could be done. Gecko, kit looks great but it’s almost $100 online. These are all tempting ideas. If i did the LCT I’d need more Churchill’s.

Well I’m sure some more projects will pop up very soon … oh look they did :joy:

@Robert_Goldman ive been putting off an idf build. I have 2 M51s and a half track with paratroopers. Not to mention a centurion and another halftrack with the ironside conversion set. I may be pivoting to that next but these all are tempting. I’d really like to reduce my stash.

Sounds like you’ve got your hands full of some interesting projects

@Robert_Goldman much appreciated, i have a centurion with 1967 markings and i was going to do a diorama with it passing by a T-34/ 122mm spg eventually. Just not sure if the unit that fought the Syrians in 67 had the centurions or not.

It looks great at first sight, sure. As soon as you start comparing it to photos and drawings, though, just about no part of it beyond the basic hull and deck are actually accurate :frowning: Pretty much every-bloody-thing else is off in size and/or shape, or is missing altogether.

That ended up very nice indeed, very nice.

@Jakko i may have to pass on it then. I’d be very reluctant to pay $100 to have to do an additional $100 of fixes. But knowing me one day if i get it for the right price i may lol.

@BootsDMS thank you, not gonna lie i had some shakes nights with it wondering if it’d look better slammed on the ground.

Hi @Gregory_J_Copplin. Nicely done! The overall look really reflects the somber nature of the scene.

I also think this was a great example of how good this site is; initial broad concept from you that is thrown out for wider consultation, value add from multiple sources to guide the project, refining and researching the build, then you doing the build with some more advice from the brains trust along the way = really nice results!

Thanks for sharing!

@SamS i 100% agree. I’ve had a bad habit of doing projects and just posting the end result. I feel like this forum is better when you see the sausage get made too.

@Jakko this would be an interesting landing craft to do, don’t know too much about it but i found this picture in the Wikipedia page for the dieppe raid.

Bravo, and completely convincing weathering – just how good I think would be proved with a couple of eye-level photos in monochrome – if you don’t have the tech I’d be happy to turn ‘em b&w for you :+1: :+1:

@Dioramartin please and thank you that’d be awesome.

That’s an LCM (1):

Originally called Mechanised Landing Craft (MLC) before the unified British–American nomenclature was adopted, but as it says LCM on the side, the photo was clearly taken after that.

I don’t think there’s a 1:35 scale kit of it, but I think Milicast do one in 1:76.
