1/350 HMS NAIAD late summer of 1941

Although Naiad had a quite attractive camouflage I have decided go for the dark hull / light upper-works scheme, which according the the Profile Morskie on the ship she wore from mid 1941., I like that scheme as it shows off the racy lines of a Dido class vessel, which have always attracted me to the class. The Kit.

The decks are just test fitted, a nice neat fit.

The box is well crammed with sprues, and 6 etched frets, enough that they cover most of the essentials.

The keel has been laid, a very straight forward start, prop shafts and rudder are fixed in place, the forward funnel casing has be partially built up as that needs to fit under the aft end of the fo’c’s’le deck. details still need painting and the uptake building and fitting.

Overview with the fo’c’s’le deck test fitted.

.

According Alan Raven’s RN Camo '39-'40 p 46 he notes the decks were stained medium grey in '41. this scheme as carried until the vessel’s loss in March ,42,

More soon. :clinking_beer_mugs: Cheers, Si

Hi Nikos,

As always, welcome aboard, great to finally get a Dido in 1/350. I hope Trumpy are going to deliver on the toothless terror, that will be an intersting build.

ooo! I always admired this class, Si, and hoped one day we’d see them in styrene 350! :slightly_smiling_face:

There’s something about that 5.25" armament!

Be interesting to see how far the included PE will go in sprucing up the kit… There’s a 3d printed aftermarket set by YZM available, but that looks costly and not much fun with everything molded onto the bridge deck-wouldn’t enjoy painting that… Some pieces available at Micro Master also…

Brass 5.25" barrels available at Master Model might be worthwhile… :innocent:

Following vicariously with interest

Welcome aboard mate, I do like the way they look with three 5.25 turrets up for’d. I have the Micro Master turrets, torpedo tubes and a few bits and pieces, I have another order on the way from them which should have the boats as well. The Master Model barrels would be a good thought, I will ponder that.

The masthead radar aerials could be better, again there is the spare etch box,

Quite a parts count f, progress will be slow and steady. There is a good photo of the Bonaventure’s Bridge in Morskie on the Naiad.quite a bit of detail to add.

Welcome aboard Rory,

So far pretty good, test fitting the major superstructure units hasn’t found any problems.

Cheers :clinking_beer_mugs: Si

At the end of last week got the lower hull sprayed red primer, a good match for RN anti fouling red. The boot topping was also painted in.

The B and Q gundecks, X gundeck and the after funnel casing, with the pompom platforms test fitted; the five main gun turrets, (Micro Master 3D printed) turrets built up, the kit turrets look pretty good for shape, but not as detailed.

The turrets have been sprayed, four light grey and Y turret, which sits on the maindeck level medium grey.

The searchlight platforms were sprayed light grey, not a mistake, the upper section will remain light grey, the lower section will be brush painted medium grey.

More soon (ish)

Hi Martin,

Thanks for looking in. The swordfish upgrade does look rather good. I do intend to add some detail to the upper bridge, there is a couple of good photos of the Bonaventure’s Bridge in the Profile Morske on the Naiad. I will be replacing parts likes weapons and boats with a mix of MicroMaster and Black cat parts.

A bit of progress recently, this really is a kit of many parts. slowly but surely I have been working from bow to stern.

Pretty much done up to and including B turret gun deck, railing s to be put in place, then B turret can be fixed down. One of the five park benches in place, in the photo in the Profile Morske of Naiad in the scheme, the benches are lighter than the light grey. The anchor cable and the main turrets are from Micro Master,

A quick overview of the project so far, with all the sub assemblies test fitted in place, except the main director tower, as that is a very tight fit, and I don’t want to risk any damage trying to get it out prior to painting

More soon.

Looking good Si

I have to say, much more progress than I of late, although, given all I’m doing at the moment is prepping parts for paint, I imagine there’ll be a great lurch forward at some point…

Thanks Russ, I have always had a soft spot for the Didos, with the three turrets at the front. Nice to have some in 1/350. At the moment I working my way fwd to aft getting all the tiny vents, lockers etc on, and those park benches are a real pain to fold.

Looking forward to seeing some progress on HMS Punjab,

A little bit of progress over the last week or so.

three out of five of the park benches in place, all the other bits and pieces on including the railings, and B turret in Place, Q gun deck has most of the detail added, just a few more tiny bits to add, including the railings, thence on with adding detail to the upper bridge.

Ladders and railings going on aft of the bridge structure.

Q gundeck nearly done, till have the other two park benches to add on the starboard side.

More soon… I hope
