Thanks mate… Yeah, normally most details below the waterline can be a bit off but Trumpeter’s effort on the Tribals is way off and needs some fixing…
Not much to do on the shafts, but the props need changing from 4 blades to 3 blade units…

Hi Russ,
Good to see some progress. I knew the Trumpeter kit was a bit off here and there, it facinating watching it being corrected properly. Looking forward to the next installment.
Cheers, Si
Fellow styrene (and resin) handlers…
Just a small update today… adding more details to the hull…
I’ll add the rudder next and start the painting process…
Now, does anyone know the closest colour to use for below the waterline, given latest reseach is showing that the RN used a grey anti-fouling paint… @Jamie ???
I will need to go back and look but I seem to recall in my PoW research that it was the capital ships that had the grey anti-fouling and not the smaller ships. But take that with a grain of salt.
Hm… Interesting… Thankyou Rory… Will be careful not to rush into a decision here…
Hi Russ,
Nice work, as to the anti fouling colour, can’t help.
Looking forward to seeing some colour on her.
Cheers, Si
Good eye for the detail Russell! And great scratch working! Well done!
Thanks Guys
Well, the first colour is down. After a bit of scouring around, it seems there’s no definitive info on what colour the anti fouling should be. It seems it varied by ship yard and time period. There’s only 2 ships of the class that have evidence of colour choice and that is red. So red I will use for the anti fouling.
But first, I’m going to paint the decks and work my way down on this build. Punjabi like here sisters had a coating called Semtex (Cemtex) over the steel decks in certain areas.
Now according to John from WEM, Semtex/Cemtex right out of the can was grey.
According to White Ensign Models camouflage schemes HMS Eskimo, the Colourcoats paint to use is AC US 02 Dark Gull Gray.
Dark Gull Grey from Colourcoats isn’t currently available so I chose Humbrol Gull Grey which I think is pretty close… Of course I used the enamel…
Next up will be masking off to apply the deck grey…
Ok, “Tribe” I need some help with the central anti aircraft platform: who else thinks that Trumpeter’s effort is way off the plans?
Hi Russ,
Compared to the the drawings in "British Warships of the Second World War, by John Roberts, it is way off, below the drawing compared to the kit part on my HMS Eskimo sans bow, still waiting for me to build a base for it.
Sorry to rain on your parade even more, the pompom platform does not look too clever either.
Cheers, Si
I totally agree, Si: the structure below the AA platform is also way off.
Whilst I can probably turn a blind eye to the Pom Pom platform as it’s not too bad, that AA platform may be in need of some 3d CAD revision
Well, it’s been a minute…
So, after painting the Semtex on the deck I masked off and laid down the dark admiralty deck grey
I followed that up with the boot top
and then the red…
Perhaps the most rewarding part of any build for me is when I remove the masking tape to reveal the colours beneath
The carnage
After a bit of a rub with some P2000 to knock off the edges between the colours, the hull will be back off to the paint shop again for a clear gloss coat to seal it all in and provide a hard shell for protection during the build… If I can get some decals for the hull numbers and depth markers it will allow them to be added also
Over at the drawing office, I’ve been drawing up the 0.5" Machine gun platform for some 3d printing
The correct shape of the structure beneath the platform
The deck
and drawn up in 3d
There’s a bit of tweaking to do yet… but it’s getting closer…
Thanks for looking
Good progress, Russell!
I always say, demasking a model kit is like unwrapping a christmas present. You never know what you really get.
True that Torsten…
Great to see an update, The hull looks very good considering what you started with. Very interesting seeing the design work for the 3d printed gun platform.
Looking forward to the next update.
Cheers, Si
Semtex???
Cheers,
M
Very nice and neat work with the painting Russ, the lines always look good running along the hull separating the colours.
@MoramarthT Hi Tom,
yep, Semtex was a type of gritty cement-like compound used on the decks of Royal Navy ships, such as destroyers like Punjabi, which depending on what time period of the ship’s service came in 3 different colours…
This of course, is not to be confused with the plasticky “bang-bang” stuff made popular in the talkies that it shares its name with.
Thanks. One learns something new every day…
Cheers,
M
