Was trying to find this earlier ….. Highway of Heroes
Its a normal work day in the US too. Unless you are with USPS or Govt. employee …. and arent furloughed already… Some one has to run all those mattress sales everybody gave their lives for.
Should be a must read ….. Eleventh Month, Eleventh Day, Eleventh Hour by Joseph E. Persico: 9780375760457 | PenguinRandomHouse.com: Books
Nothing special on that account in the Netherlands, as we managed to keep out of WW1.
Start of the Carnaval period in the more catholic parts however, and St. Martins’ day.
This is around Arras:
Nothing in Sweden either, our last “war” was more than 200 years ago (managed to stay out of WW I & II).
The merchants are pushing ‘Singles Day’ instead, we haven’t had this before …
any reason to convince us to buy stuff is a good reason or something like that,
all Hail the Mighty Mammon I suppose
I honour the fallen too, and hope future historians will recognise that WW1 – in Europe - actually lasted for 31 years, and that the 1918 Armistice was in truth just a disastrous truce. There’s even an argument it didn’t end in 1945 either & that we’re still living under a truce.
I disagree with Sluff @sluff. It is not a normal work day in the US. Veteran’s Day is an official US Government holiday. Retail is open, but many offices are closed today. In my hometown (Naugatuck, CT) we have a Veteran’s Day parade, where veteran’s groups march with bands down the main street to the town green, cheered on by many spectators. Then services are held. Most restaurants offer veterans free lunch today.
Happy Veteran’s Day to all of my Band of Brothers, fellow veterans all.
Even for the Dutch ones?
Our National Veterans Day is alway held on the last Saturday of June.
Yes Erwin, even for the Dutch ones. 11\11 is considered an International holliday, even if your Day of Remembrance is different.
Thanks…
Allas, it is a normal working day for us…
I honour those that fell and thank God on my bare knees for having made the right decision 34 year ago and managed to steer clear, out of harms way. Many of those I served with ended up at Srebrenica…..
I most certainly do not envy those men and women!
