Another possibiity - a shadow box where you’re looking down. (POV of another drone) Halfway down you have a piece of plexiglass running across the shodow box. The drones could rest on that. Some could even be elevated slightly on pieces of piano wire. Done correctly they would absolutely look like they were hovering. If the viewport to the shadowbox is smaller the the actual box, you won’t even see the edges of the plexiglass.

So I started playing for a minute

and if you use the right glass, the edges are not much of an issue.
