AFV Club M35A1 Quad 50 Gun Truck Nancy kit review

I’m James Lyles, author of several books about gun trucks used in Vietnam. I did four tours in Vietnam and I was an NCOIC on gun trucks and I’ve been told I’m considered an expert on the subject. I found quite a few discrepancies with the AFV Nancy kit and I’d like to air them here.

There were quite a few running changes in Nancy’s history. Slight armor changes, quite a few paint jobs, etc.

The first thing I found is the absence of the M20 trailer which other people have also noted. The kit offers two tall riser rings instead. The M20 trailer is supposed to be mounted to the bed floor on a frame assembly.

There is also supposed to be a built-up wooden floor platform surrounding the trailer. This wooden floor is also missing from the kit. By the way, the frame assembly would not be visible once the wooden floor is installed.

Nancy did not have an armored bed liner like some 5-ton quad 50’s. There is however a section of steel that sits on the tailgate that’s attached to the rear of the bed sides for support. This piece of steel holds extra equipment or ammo.

There were two manufacturers of front turret shields and they are noticeably different. The lower part “nose” of the shield is much larger than the other. The real Nancy had the larger one. That shield, referred to as the M45C shield was made by Kimberly-Clark. The one provided in the kit is the smaller one which was made by Frary-Landers-Clark. This incorrect small nose turret shield makes adding the decal with the teeth extremely difficult. The shield in the kit can be modified to better resemble the one on Nancy. I have shown how to accomplish this in another topic.

The decals in the kit for the face and teeth on the turret shield are totally wrong. I have added a photo dated early 1969 showing the correct graphics.

The flower graphics on the side shields changed numerous times during Nancy’s history. The ones provided in the kit are generic but sufficient.

The kit provides a bumper number 12 but Nancy NEVER had a bumper number 12. The only bumper numbers were 28T-9, 28T-66, 444T-55 and 444T-72.

I’ve determined after years of research that the image of the Nancy doll on the rear turret shield was only on the vehicle for a very short time when it was assigned to the 28th TC. (8GP, 27T, 28T, 9) Unless you’re adding the correct 28T 9 bumper number, it should be omitted.

The bumper guides were made from lengths of rebar. The rebar was painted white with a red lug nut attached to the top but I have also seen the lug nuts painted white. The top of the bumper guides should be about even with the bottom of the windshield frame.

Great info. Can you copy the info about the shield and post it in this thread. It would be most helpful to keep it all in one place. Also, any pics of the wooden platform and extended bed parts?

Hello James!
Thanks a lot for the writeup, it’s very valuable. It will certainly help me when I get to building my Nancy kit.
When you write about mounting the trailer to the bed, do you mean this by “frame assembly”?

Could you provide a sketch of the wooden frame and the tailgate box?

And maybe you could help me with a much more rare “gun truck” - where a quad was mounted on an M548 tracked carrier?

Thanks for sharing and have a nice day

I don’t have any pictures of the complete wooden floor surrounding the M20 trailer but this can give you an idea of what it looked like.

Yes, that’s the frame assembly I mentioned. It is hidden by the wooden flooring.

No sketches but I can provide a pretty good picture.

Sure, here are some pictures of the way I did the M45D shield conversion to the M45C shield. The pictures are self explanatory.

Here’s what the shield looks like mounted to the Tamiya Halftrack frame which is identical to the Kirin resin kit. The shield from both kits is smaller than the Dynamo or Nancy kit but the procedure is the sa

me.

Great info James. Thanks for posting. I was tracking the missing M20 trailer and have a resin one from AFV Club’s M548 Guntruck for it. I wasn’t aware of the wooden deck nor the extended box on the bed.

Another, small correction is to fill the hole on the right front fender. It shouldn’t be there since on the M35A1 the exhaust runs along the frame and exits between the rear wheels, not by a stack up through the fender.

Hello James, great update on the Nancy, would these changes go for the other quad 50 trucks too? I have all of your books and have talked to you before, as one of the books has a picture of a model of my unit’s 5 ton dump gun trucks, “Mafia Operated”. Would you by any chance have any more info on the gun box layout of these? Wayne

Some reference pics of the actual “Nancy” at different times as well. Interestingly, from the below pics, it looks like “Nancy” never carried a spare tire.

They were all different. Some had armor that was single or double wall construction. Some even had double wall filled with concrete like Peace Maker.

Yes, I’ve seen many pictures of Nancy and there was no hole in the fender. In fact, I never noticed that there was even a cut out in the fender filled from the factory.

There would not have been since the hole came with the later M35A2 model with multi-fuel engine and a few other changes.

I think your pic above of “Peace Maker” is reversed as well since the M60 and M2 ammo boxes and charging handle are reversed. It should look like below.

Nancy did carry a spare but not all the time. Here’s a couple of pictures of the spare. Please note the absence of a flower on the side armor in one of the pictures.

Good catch, I noticed the ammo cans on the M60’s didn’t look right.

No big deal. That’s the way the picture was sent to me.

Hi guys, I just step in to thank everyone of you for such a meticulous research and for making it available. I’ve always been interested in guntrucks but never gave it a go on a model.
As I stated in another topic I am willing to make a GT as soon as the dumper from AFV Club will be on the nearest market and you make the approach to this particular subject a real historical satisfaction.

When I first got to the unit Mafia Operated was named Peacemaker, pretty sure its the same truck From my picture it looks like they changed the gun setup… Wayne

Yes, that’s right. Mafia Operated was formerly named Peace Maker.
