Airfix Tiger I - the new kit

@FirstCircle - Matthew,

I must commend you on your patience and resilience in beating this unruly beast into some form of submission. This kit is enough to turn a beginning modeller off of the hobby for certain. It shouldn’t be requiring this amount of effort to make a kit presentable. May this build progress more smoothly from this point forward.

Cheers,
—Jan :beers: :crossed_fingers:

Thanks Jan, unruly, yes, one of the most badly behaved kits I’ve come across… I think I’m almost there now, thanks, with the major works after today. There’s some bolts to be added to the mud guards and details to the track holders.
The new mudguards from brass sheet are fixed on to triangular strips (nice to find a use for them at last) cemented to the sides. Hopefully they are better than the kit items in terms of being in the right position. According to my ruler and the plans I’m looking at, they are, but the main thing is do they look right…?

Oh yes, I forgot about the tracks, probably need to do something there as well.

OMG this is a joke ? I build a DAK Tiger I from Revell a two decades back, but looks MORE better of this NEW kit from Airfix. This kit looks as kit from ´50… Lack of details and - everythink… I don´t understand why Airfix released this in late 2020 as New Tool Kit… Tiger I is “Milking Cow” and can make many money, but this is really horrible and i have a “Eye pain” for this… I don´t build a small scale AFV many years, but Revell´s Tiger I, King Tiger or Abrams are still nice kits and most better of this…It is a shame, especially when Britons have Tiger I in Bowington… And they released this horrible and ugly kit… “WIRKLICH UNGLAUBLICH !”

This is a candidate to plastic bin

In aircraft make Airfix nice and comparable kits, but this Tiger is real tragedy :frowning: :open_mouth:

Maybe we should start a rival company called TANKfix

Hi all,

I have received the Airfix Sherman Firefly Vc in the post today, I hope it’s a tad more accurate than this Tiger as I do not have the knowledge, patience or skills of Matthew,.

Great build Matthew, a real work of miniature art, :+1: :slightly_smiling_face:.

Cheers,,

There is a build and correction review on the Firefly here: Airfix Sherman First-look (ian Hanratty) - Missing-Lynx I guess it’s OK if you really need one, but if you can find a Dragon kit, it’s much better!

Hello First Circle!
I really don’t want to nitpick! You’ve done a really fantastic job! The only tiny little thing that’s been bothering me for awhile are the exhaust covers (Flammvernichter)! I suppose it isn’t that easy but I would try to hollow the mufflers! I really am no Tiger expert but I would also place the nuts according to the rods supporting the round exhaust covers!
No offence intended!
Keep up the good work and enjoy it!

Regards,

Mark

He’s actually put the nuts at the correct angles. It is Airfix’ rods that are suspect.

I agree with David. And I’d consider myself stupid not to.

Oh, my goodness!

Hadn’t been back in a long while and what a surprise to find that you’ve carefully managed to rebuild this kit to actually look like a Tiger I in this scale. Nice! Reading through the comments it was somewhat like someone being on a high-rise building and people calling for you to jump and you did. Being away from this build for a while I imagine you are recovering from the fall.

My hats off to you for sure. You are a very dedicated modeler Mathew, and you’re sticking to your guns. Keep it coming and don’t give up.

This kit looks below gaming piece level without the improvements.

Thanks Eddy, appreciate your comments. I will (probably) get back to this at some point. The low quality of this kit has been made all the more obvious in contrast to the very nice Vespid kits which I thought I should finish first, the Comet which is done, and the Maus which I am working on.

I saw recently a build of the newly tooled Airfix 1/35 Cromwell, and although that looks like a ‘proper’ kit instead of a toy, I see they managed to incorporate an error, almost as inexplicable as some on this kit, on the wheels. Just made me wonder again what’s going on there in terms of research, and more importantly, review and checking before committing to making the tooling.

I got the kit, can you elaborate?

Do you mean the Cromwell? The road wheels have six bolts instead of eight. Especially odd considering their 1/76 version has eight.

Ah, I see.

Thanks for the heads up on the Cromwell.
Any other problems to note? They seem to be making a lot of careless mistakes of late.
Don’t think I’ll be passing on my Tamiya in favour of it.

Very realistically painted tires! first time seeing dried dirt on the contact surface of the tires as they should be instead of worn out black, of course this is possible when traveling on a clean paved road.
