So… we receive this product in at work about a week nd half ago or so, and I gotta say, they are selling like tomorrow does not exist. Everybody wants them now
So I tried them out the other day. I don’t have a paint mule, but I do have a paint horse…
An airfix 1/32 Scots Greys horse that I used to try out for airbrushing Humbrol Acrylics…
I decided to try the markers here on the hooves and a few assorted areas. I used Rubber Black and RLM 66 on the hooves
I also used the RLM 66 in areas like the nose, ears, and mouth.
I am going to try some acrylic glazes for making the dapple base area, along with the AK Real Color markers, since the flat white is a bit translucent. I used them to cover up areas on the horses haunches that I had scratched up testing the hardiness of the Humbrol Acylics
stand by for further updates regarding these paint pens…
The tips allow for a wide variety of application, and they don’t need to be shaken before being used, like some of the others mentioned above. plus they are actually acrylics, so have quick drying time for redcoats, touch ups, etc…
I can see where the AK markers can be very useful in bordering, shadowing, and outlining where inks aren’t dark or precise enough to fill in fine line areas.
I kind of want to try them out on a French WWII AFV which has the black bordering between the camo colors. I think they might also be good for the spots in German WWII ambush schemes. I’ll be trying them soon on road wheel rims.
Got a set myself, had been hoping Molotow would extend their range of colours - but AK beat them to it. Have tried Gunmetal & rubber black so far, seem to flow well & stick to the part. Really like the magnetic box.
Cheapest price I’ve seen is straight from AK Interactive, even with shipping included.
These would work great on 1/35 to 1/9 camouflaged figures, especially complex patterns like Multicam and digital camouflage since 32 colors are represented.
I forgot to add a photo of the markers with the tip uncapped. The side can be used for wide area applications, while the pointed tip obviously can be used for more precise work
I bought a set direct from AK. Gotta say, I really, really like them. I haven’t tried to use them for a large area (think camo on a tank), but for small detail things that seem to be a PITA for a brush (not to mention, no constant dipping into the paint container). Fantastic.
I just tried them today to “paint” camouflage on a 1/16 figure and they are amazing! They are easy to draw in the patterns and the paint is smooth, thin, even, and flows well. It’s like highlighting over the primer.
They only come with one tip size; they are not double-ended markers. As such, one still has to use a brush to get into the nooks and crannies as the marker tip is too large to fit into tiny spaces and gaps.
Paint marker control is fantastic and I didn’t have any runs or splotches. It’s like using a highlighter.
I don’t know how much paint is contained in each marker, but a 1/16 figure doesn’t have small surfaces. Still, I managed to “paint the camouflage pattern” within an hour and that will take longer with a brush, paint bottles, and palette.
Best of all, no cleanup! Just snap the cap back and you’re done with the marker!
I’ll take photos of my figure when I get the chance.
I highly recommend AK Real Color Markers! They are a great time saver and not messy to use!
+1 for these AK Real Color Markers. I’ve been using them all over the place for about a month now and they are now a permanent part of my frontline kit. Anytime I used to reach for a bottle and a brush, I now reach for a marker. They are so high quality that their versatility knows no limits. You can use them for anything. They go on smooth, have excellent coverage, and dry quickly. Great control, pinpoint tip for details and broad side for wide applications. 90% of the jobs that you would reach for a brush for can be done by these markers in half the time and when done you just snap the cap on and put it away. I’ve put them through their paces and these are winners. Very highly recommended.
Here is my 1/16 “Hot Off the Molds 2024” ICM Ukrainian figure with kitbashed Airborne Miniature parts. The camouflage and helmet were entirely “painted” with AK Real Color Markers.
As you can see, the markers can’t get into every nook and cranny like the tip of a brush, but they are very fast and effective in drawing in the camouflage pattern. I still need to draw in the black dots and splotches with the AK black marker.
The AK Real Color Markers are excellent for painting the edges of resin bases instead of using a brush. Just use the broad side of the marker and swipe the edge…goes really fast instead of using a brush head to spread and smooth the paint around. Best of all, paint won’t go over the edge onto the base surface, and if it does go over, the AK Marker paint wipes away easier than brush paint.
Just think of AK Real Color Markers as a highlighter. Anything you can “highlight with paint” will work and it behaves just like a highlighter…fast drying and no mess if you watch where the tip is going. A brush tip can get into those hard-to-reach spots so AK Markers won’t 100% replace the need for brush painting.
AK does have more colors coming in a sense, in the Playmarker format. Not Real Colors, but it will add more colors and the brush tip is actually very good for painting fine detail. I tried one out when I was at AK two weeks and really like the tip.
