Arma 1/72 Hurricane Mk.1 Tropical

Probably needs a couple of spots touching up, but happy with it. I used Humbrols new bottle dropper acrylic Mid Stone. Bit thick out of the bottle, but it sprayed a lot nicer than the old plastic jar range. The Dark Earth was Vallejo’s Modelair. The colours look a lot stronger in the picture than real life. No doubt the light.

I’ll leave the underside masks on until I finish any work on the upper side. Don’t want to damage any of that, especially the white side!

Painting looks good, Stephen! :+1:

Thanks. I used the white-tac roll masking method. I had wanted to use the cut-out masks Arma provide as a download. But my printer was out of ink, so went with the tried and tested method. It might not match the official pattern completely, but Arma state that this Hurricane was repainted during its time in Malta. So I can put any slight differences down to that.

I’m really impressed with this kit and I’m definitely going to get a few more from Arma. They already have the various Mk.IIs out in 1/48 and a Mk.1 is imminent. They should be even better than the 1/72. Go for it!

I learned a few things from this one that will help when I get around to their other Hurricanes I bought. Might even pick up another Mk.1 at some point, as I want to one of Roald Dahl’s aircraft (80Sqn had 12 Hurricanes in Greece, so likely flew whatever was available on the day). Assuming I can find out serial numbers etc. I believe there’s an excerpt from his logbook in ‘Going Solo’. I can check that as we have a few copies at work.

Masks removed from the undersides. A couple of spots needed touching up where I had a bit of paint bleed. Really happy with it though. First time I’ve done the RAF black and white undersides. Always been put off by the difficulty of getting a solid white and masking. Will definitely be doing it again on some early war schemes.

Looks really good, Stephen! Funny though not only the RAF had the black underside wing but also the Luftwaffe for some time.
I have also done this scheme on William McKnight’s Hurricane I from Airfix, some years ago.

Thanks.

I don’t think I’ve seen the Luftwaffe version. Seen the FW190’s with the red and white striping. Was it an early or late war scheme?

Do you have some shots of your Hurricane?

Nicely done. I would love to see Roald Dahl’s plane.

I wonder if we could do something like celebrity pilots as a campaign? Not sure how to frame it up.

It would be an interesting one. Might be better to do a multi-service campaign?

Reminds that somewhere I have got a decal sheet covering US bombers with Jimmy Stewarts Liberator, Gene Roddenberry’s B-17 and another Clark Gable was supposed to have flown on while making a documentary movie (apparently without permission from higher-ups).

I am going to try and grab a hold of the book in my lunch break and see what I can dig up regarding Dahl’s aircraft.

Have to do some research about that, Stephen. But I think it were mainly 109’s. Give me some time and I get back to you.

Sure have … :rightwards_hand:

F/O William McKnight, No. 242 Sqn., January 1941. He was shot down and killed in this aircraft over the Channel.

That’s turned out nice. Thanks.

Did a bit of searching online and haven’t found much on the Luftwaffe equivalent scheme. Couple of shots of He219’s.

Looks really nice. I agree on those black/white schemes—very striking and they tend to start conversations with non-modelers.

Glad you tried it and looking forward to seeing your next attempt. No need to be scared of it, as you discovered!

Thanks. The next trick will be to realistically weather it. Probably a light panel wash with light grey and dust pigments.

The next I’ll do will probably be one of the new Airfix Blenheims. The Mk.IV came with that scheme for the Coastal Command option.

After a couple of weeks away from the Hurricane, I’ve got the first batch of decals down today. While nicely printed, everythings sharp and strong colours, they are stubborn. They really don’t want to come off the backing and are tricky to get to conform over details. And that’s with a good soak of Microsol and Set.

Will have to see how they look after an evening of drying.

Thinking about decals, can anyone confirm that Tamiya X20 and Gunze thinners (the type that smells of iso alcohol) work as decal softener?

I seem to recall hearing something about that.

Second round of decals today. That’s pretty much all of the upper and fuselage side done. I have found hot water works better with them. Just noticed looking at the photos that I’ve got the starboard side gun cover to put down. Will do that tomorrow with the underside.

One thing I spotted was a slight error on the placement instructions. They got decals 51 and 52 mixed up when compared with the numbered items on the sheet.

Looks good so far, Stephen! Decals always work better in warm water than in cold. I heat up water in a kettle for a few seconds and let it cool down while I’m working with the decals. As for the softener, I use Decal Sof from Revell. Maybe you can get it also over at your place. For really stubborn decals I still have Hypersol from Agama up the sleeve. But that can destroy the decal if I’m not careful enough.

Thanks.

I use warm usually, but this time of year it doesn’t stay warm very long! Think that was the problem I was having last week. Today I kept it in a thermal mug and poured out fresh for every decal. Should’ve done that last week. Usually use Microsol and Set and have Migs Decal Fix. Usually does the trick.

And last ones down.

The yellow bordered roundel really stands out on the black side. I really like this early colour scheme.

Sure does. Very striking. Looks like a great kit too.
