B5N2 Kate -1/72 Hasegawa

This is on the way and should be here Friday. I did one some time ago in an overall NMF scheme and thought I’d try a multi colored Pearl Harbor torpedo plane this time.

The kit just arrived, off to give the plastic a wash then start cockpit painting.

Looks good. I’ve got a couple of these and Airfix’s new tool (planned, but never got around to starting a Pearl Harbour build). So I’ll be watching with interest.

What green did you use for the cockpit interior?

This green, mixed it with acrylics years ago using Hasegawa formula in the 1/72 Kate instructions, bottle is almost 20 years old.

Interior just about done.

Let me know how that Airfix Kate is. This old Hasegawa, Mania mold, is old and loaded with flash and inaccuracies.

Paint looks good. It’s very similar to a bottle of AK ‘s Japanese Interior Green I picked up not long ago. The greens not as strong as Tamiya’s.

I can get some sprue shots up for you of the new Airfix. Might be tomorrow as I’m out later today. But, it is a beautiful kit. Very sharp moulding and they included a lot of options for the ordnance. A few different types of bombs and torpedo. They did include the wooden tail fins they fitted to keep the torpedoes from running too deep in the harbour.

The good news is that Airfix are reissuing the Kate this year after being out of the catalogue for quite a while. I really wish they would do a new Val and Devastator to the same standard.

Thanks, show me your Airfix BUILD when you get to it. Have seen lotsa screen shots of the sprues. Airfix NEEDS a new Val for SURE. I built it 14 years ago and it was on the level of their Euro 2000 fighter, horrid but at least it looked somewhat like a Val.

From what I have read the best choice is the old 1/72 Fujimi D3A1, rude and crude but better, if you want a “good un” go for Hasegawa 1/48.

I have the fuselage and cockpit closed up with machine gun in rear stored for a closed canopy. I also have the engine and cowl on and some seams on the upper fuselage puttied.

Have to admit I haven’t gotten around to the Airfix Kate yet, meant to but other projects got in the way.

I’ll get some shots of the sprues tomorrow if you want.

I do have the Fujimi Val and the ZTS Plastic clone. Not bad kits. I also have the Hasegawa 1/48, even though that’s not my usual scale. Got from Plazajapan a while ago after some kits I did order went missing between Japan and the UK. They gave me credit and free p&p so I treated myself to it.

I will get around to that little project eventually as I have pretty much gathered everything I need for it.

Thanks, I did some checking around and the best in 1/72 is the Fujimi D3A1. I can find some of these but I am limited as a lot of shops outside of USA won’t ship to me. No clue why that is but it is what it is. I just lucked out, some kind sole in Canada seems to deliver here!!!

Hopefully you can find one.

I’m not sure if Fujimi still have it in production. I managed to find mine second hand last year for a good price. I have seen them being sold for more than the newer Hasegawa a few times.

The Kate is coming along nicely. Looks it went together without any trouble.

BTW, moving soon so I may not get to make many more updates for a few months.
