BATUS Chieftain Mk10 Stillbrew & CVRT Spartan Range Safety

Gave the Spartan a new primer coat and had a little play about with the cupola and seeing how it looks red.
The upper part of the hull above the cocktail stick will be done in red and possibly the rear bins. Not decided on that yet.

The hull sides will be normal BATUS cam and I will paint the tracks and running gear by hand.

@AfvAficionado , Mal, here’s an image of a Stillbrew with the red marker displayed.

And I circled the white marker here, as for some reason I could download the image.

Will start work on the GPMG mount now .

And this is as far as I’ve got with the new GPMG mount.

Still need to add the solenoid and solenoid cable which goes in the thin bit cut white strip next to the hatch. The other bit of thin cut strip is where the 7.62 belt gets fed up through.
Also need to add the spent case slide which will be some cut spare etch.
The elevation linkage and it’s mount are slightly out of place on this but I won’t try and change those as the resin is to delicate. It’s only me that will know so they can stay. I did rework the area behind the cupola spotlight as it was a bit bare on this one.

Very nice job on the MG cradle.

Thanks Olivier, this one was about easier to work on unlike the Striker one I did. The main uprights were pretty good and thankfully the GPMG was able to be cut out without damaging them. I may do a few more things to it as it won’t have an MG in it … Will have another look at it tonight

Just started added some block base colour. Using XF60 as a base but will go back to NATO green for the cam as I want a different tone from the Chieftain. From where the XF60 stops, everyone above that will be Red.

I won’t get to far ahead of myself with it, and will finish up the cupola tomorrow before I do anything else.

Cupola is now done as far as I’m going with it. All I did was added the front mounting pin and retaining chain/cord and the spent case slide under cradle.

Will begin the wash and filter process for the Mk10 tomorrow and also make a mount for the range safety markers.

Really enjoying seeing your work on the Spartan cupola, some nicely scratched detail there John, :+1: :slightly_smiling_face:.

And the hessian rolls worked a real treat hiding the hull/plate gap on the Chieftain, excellent work, :+1: :slightly_smiling_face:.

Thanks G, there is a bit of artistic measure with the hessian and lack of sag etc, but on the whole, I am very happy how its turning out. The Spartan is a really lovely little kit and I wish I had one to build from new, and hopefully the transformation into a redtop range safety will do it justice ( and there is a bit more artistic licence involved with that … but hey ho )

Tonight I put another wash of AK OIF & OEF on the Stillbrew. I want it pretty dirty as, … Well it’s a Chieftain… They were never the cleanest lol… Put that away to let the wash fully dry and then recoated the Spartan cupola with another coat of red. The whole cupola and MG mount still need to be tided up and the vision blocks repainted & spotlight painted etc.
Have also painted the MG mount in NATO green as I wanted some colour variation on top of the hull.

I think the mount would of stayed in its standard colour regardless of the rest of the cupola being painted.

In the last image you can just make out the Spartan in the background with a 1st coat of NATO green on it. I did it by brush as I couldn’t be bothered getting the airbrush set up.

I just noticed I somehow lost the front mounting pin, so will have to knock another one tomorrow.
For the Spartan I’ve decided on the top of the hull will be red, the rear bins and on the right hand side the NBC pack access panel will be red and I will mask off an rectangle on the LH side which will have the C/S put on it along with a rear bin and the NBC pack panel.

Looking good thus far John, and in my mind’s eye I think the contrast of red upper and camo lower will make for an interesting and eye catching vehicle, :+1: :slightly_smiling_face:.

Thanks G, they did have a few warriors out there that were totally red but I didn’t to go that far. And I thought if I leave a bit of cam on show it will show were its roots were in an ex exercise Spartan, now reused in the Range safety environment.
I started a bit more of the red tonight, the rear bins and the NBC pack access door.

Did a few areas on the cupola again and also finished off the vision blocks using Tamiya clear great.

Also repainted the tracks with MIG tracks, then gave them a black wash and then did the pads and roadwheel rubbers with Tamiya black rubber.

Got a rough coat of red on the top of the hull. Left some bits in primer that will get their own colours later. The engine and TX decks will get a wash of black or very dark brown to give them some depth once I’m happy with the red.

It looks a little shiny at the mo, as I have only just finished applying the red. Once it’s fully dry I will probably mist over another coat of red to even it all out.

Bert that link should take you to a BATUS Warrior Redtop used for range safety which was painted red from above the tracks. I think they had at least 3 done like that if not a few more. My Spartan Ferrari is a bit of artistic licence, but I like to think there may of been one at some point.
And you’re so right about that red paint… It was sitting there for ages lol

Thanks for that link, great picture! Might keep that in mind for when my red paint starts to get dry… :+1: :grinning:

I dont think Ferrari would be happy with the paint finish on mine lol

Sssshhhh. Mention the ‘F’ word and they want you to pay for using the trademark… it should be referred to as “Mediterranean Supercar Rosso Corsa”. MSRC for short…

Really interesting paint scheme John, :+1: :slightly_smiling_face:, looking forward to you add tone to the ‘red’ areas, I found it a difficult colour to work with, without turning it ‘pink’.
