British modern armor color questions

I have the Trumpeter 1/35 Challenger 2 Op. Telic kit, yes, I know it isn’t as nice as the Tamiya kit but it is what I already have. What color is the best or closest match to the sand the British used in Operation Telic? Trumpeter calls out to mix the paint to get the sand. I would prefer straight from the bottle. These two images show two different shades of sand from different time of day and different lighting conditions but which is the closer one?

Is the Mission Models MMP-039 British Sand Yellow Modern AFV a close enough match?

I also have the Trumpeter 1/35 Challenger 2 Enhanced Armour kit. Trumpeter calls out an olive green but the suggestions they showed from the different companies doesn’t show they make that green. Again, two different shades of green due to different lighting conditions and different time of day.

Is the Mission Models MMP-106 Bronze Green British AFV a close enough match?

For sand yellow I use AK 11362

From a previous post I did from a Warrior build being built by Max @Maximus8425 .

"Tricky one as it can be a bit subjective down to taste etc … I usually go with are Tamiya xf59 on its own or mixed with a bit of buff or buff mixed with dark yellow (xf60) also works … then theres weathering to tone it all back etc. Also lots of other sand/warm yellow colours to look at …

Also, Max @Maximus8425 recommends Mission Models MMP-039 British Sand Yellow Modern AFV- as you have mentioned above.

Green is not as tricky. Tamiya NATO green is fine and for a more faded look, Tamiya XF 65 Field Grey works well.

The different shades of green will be down to older faded exposed areas, and perhaps a new part fitted like the front mudgurds possibly. New parts will come in a standard NATO type green. Or it will down to the light.

@Terminator and @Johnnych01, thanks for the replies!

Would the same AK 11362 British sand that Terminator showed above and the Tamiya XF59 and Mission Models MMP-039 British Sand Yellow Modern AFV be used on the Meng FV510 Warrior TES kit? Meng calls out AK MC214. From the image I found of that specific paint, it looks brown, not sand yellow.

That MENG offering is far to dark from that image. Stick with the Tamiya XF59 and Mission Models MMP-039 British Sand Yellow Modern AFV - dont forget, you can tone up or down the XF59 if needed.

@Johnnych01, thank you! I will go with either Tamiya or Mission Models.

For whats its worth, once I had seen the MMP039, I would go to that as the go to.

OK! Thanks! I will look for the MMP-039.

Any NATO green is good for the Challenger 2 in overall green in Iraq? I already have the Tamiya and Mission Models NATO greens. I have not used the Mission Models yet.

To be honest mate, I have only used Tam NATO Green as a newish or very clean wagon, and the Tamiya XF 65 Field Grey as a faded older wagon or ingrained dirt … I have used The AK RC NATO Green, which I thought was ok, but I also thought it came out a bit to bright … but it could easily be used at a push for a UK or fellow NATO vehicle. After nearly 40 years of being on MBT, CVRT and around UK Mil Vehicles, those 2 Tamiya colours just look correct to my eye. I cant comment on the MM NATO green as I have never used it.

Thanks again! Appreciate the replies and first hand accounts.

No probs bud, dont forget - this is just me and living and breathing these wagons day and night … others will rightly have other opinions. It would be nice to see a comparison side by side paint off with Tamiya and the MM NATO Green to see how they vary.

So far I have only used the Tamiya NATO colors. Here is a Dragon 1/35 USMC M1A1HA painted last summer with the Tamiya colors. Still a lot more to do to finish it.

I can only paint outside so not sure when I will be able to paint again. With winter here and in my region, we have long winters so I probably can’t get to paint anything until maybe late April or early May. It is usually around May that I can start to actually paint outside.

I got the Mission Models NATO green to see if it varies from the Tamiya but haven’t gotten to use it yet. I have a few different Strykers and a Leopard C2 Mexas to do in overall green and that Challenger 2 enhanced armour kit as well. I am still learning about the different types of paint. I see some are CARC and not sure if some are CARC green or NATO green. Still trying to find out the differences if there are any.

The Takom C2 Mexas is already primed, just waiting to get back outside to paint the NATO green. Yes, I know the Meng is better but I already had the Takom kit.

Tamiya nato colours left, AK Real Color right on first pics. Tamiya on right of Abram’s hull and AKrc on left.

Perfect comparison Jim. The difference is so negligible. In real life it could be something as simple as how the paint has been stored, or just different manufacturers making the same paint but it comes out with a slightly different tone.

Great comparison. The Tamiya NATO green looks more dull/faded while the AK NATO green looks a bit brighter. That’s what I see on my computer screen.

Your AK NATO green looks closer to my Tamiya NATO green but I used a flash when taking my photos so the Tamiya NATO green on mine looks brighter.

This is my Husky TSV in MMP 039.

Great build! Thanks for sharing. I ordered a bottle of the MMP-039. I only have two British kits that will be in the overall sand so figured one bottle should be more than enough.

More than enough. I painted the Husky and still have I would say 85% of the bottle remaining, which is a good thing for me as I have a Tamiya Challenger 2, Takom Bulldog and my Warrior build will be Batus sand and green.

Thanks for the info. That’s good to know. What primer did you use?

It was Vallejo but I’ve stopped using it as it was gumming up my airbrush. I’ve recently bought Ammo on shot primer to try and during a small trial run it sprayed perfectly without any thinning needed.
