British SSC #15 Olive Drab - good color reference & information?

Khaki Green No. 3 was in use 1939-1941 by Britain, but the Canadians had stock they used into 1942. As Robert says, the switch from green was due to the need to reserve Chromium Oxide for aircraft paints. From 1941 SCC2 was the base colour until April 1944 when SCCC 15 was ordered.

It is also worth noting that British crews did not paint their own vehicles. Re-painting was done by REME when a vehicle was in for repairs/refit or by specialist maintenance units. This is why some vehicles were still in older colours after the introduction of the new ones.

The Centaur is a good example of this. They were intended to stay on the landing craft and only support the beachhead from there. Therefore a repaint to SCC15 was not considered necessary. In practice they were landed and sent forward to support troops, in their SCC2 colours.

Interestingly, look at the hatch on the front Glacis in these pics. The inside is white on one, Scc2 on the other… never say everything is done by the book…

Now compare those wartime pics with this ‘restored’ vehicle painted ala Tamiya’s model’s paint guide ‘XF-52 Dark Earth’:

I am assuming they can be thinner with Tamiya lacquer thinner yellow cap too? I don’t have klean strip in my area and I am afraid to try the lacquer thinner at Home Depot, as the same brands mineral spirits at through my future coat and paint once.

I’m sure the Tamiya would work fine though I haven’t tried it myself.

That is all very good info. I unfortunately mix my own colors and try to get as close as possible for the specific time frame.
In addition I feel that if you are real close then when the weathering is done you can not tell exactly what brand was used .

I believe that Tamiya Lacquer Thinner and Mr Colour Levelling Thinner can both be used with the Real Colour range. You may need to test ratios to suit though.

I am a bit AN@! when it comes to thinners in my paints and use the proprietary brand as that is what they are designed for and should give you no problems. I use the cheaper stuff only to clean the AB with. I have seen too many models destroyed by hardware store thinner. My personal opinion is that with the cost of the kit, accessories, paints, etc saving a few pennies using cheap bulk purchase thinner is more risk than value. My view only and not meant to disparage others who use bulk purchase thinners!

:see_no_evil::hear_no_evil::speak_no_evil: That is all I have to say on that .
