Camouflage patterns and painting

Hello I’ve been contemplating doing an USAF f-105 Vietnam era or an F-104 and just don’t know how in the world I could pull off the SEA Camo pattern my painting skills are basic, so anyone have any thoughts or suggestions on that pattern I have a couple of old unpainted kits I could practice on would have to use brush’s though all my main stuff is still in storage so.

Thanks for reading

There are so many excellent methods for masking cammo - putty, paper masks, raised paper masks, tape, even this stuff:

But they’re mostly suited for airbrushing, and it sounds as if your’e doing it by hand.

I try to avoid hand brushing when I can, unless I’m trying to replicate hand painted cammo on the real thing, as on this piece:

For SEA I would certainly find a nice can of gloss black spray paint - that eliminates one color you need to brush paint. As you suggest, use some of those models to practice on. Your main thing is paint consistency. If you get it right you won’t see brush strokes, or at worst, you might have to touch up some thin areas. If your paint goes on well you won’t see the touch ups. And nice a clear coat does wonders on leveling out brush paint jobs.

I wouldn’t worry about any kind of masking. You can freehand the edges and then go back and fill in the color. Maybe enlarge the painting guide to the size of your model so you can use it as a guide as you do the edges.

Thanks for the Information, I have a couple of sticks of Model putty I’ve never used it but thought it might be worth a shot. and yeah, I agree a rattle can would save me some pain as my brush painting resembles my house painting skills lol…

If you’re gonna hand brush the scheme, it is not that hard to pull off. The biggest challenge is having paints that hand brush well and having some decent brushes. Work lighter colors to darker.
Since you’re going to be hand brushing, masking is not really much of an issue except for perhaps in a few areas such as the canopy.
