Canadian C1 build questions

Hi Guys.

I bought the Legends C1 late Canadian Leopard conversion with the aim to do a C1 earlier then the Legends C1 late.I remember buying the MLM C1 turret set from Trackjam models after seeing Jason Bobrowichs build in AFV modeller magazine.I kept a few of the pieces but lost the mantlet cage for the PZB 200.I dont fancy doing the turret basket in the Legends set for the late C1.Not my idea of fun bending lengths of brass rod into shape using a paper template.Well what im asking is did only the later C1 Leopards use the wider cage for the gizmo?.Its a shame nobody has done a kit of the C1 apart from the mexas clad one.The C2 mexas version isnt so appealing to me.Hoping Jason or Anthony Sewards might look in.

Cheers guys from Richard

Our Leopard C1’s went through quite a few modifications during their service life, the PZB 200 camera issued late 1979 early 1980, single protective cage installed, IRS 100 thermal pointer issued, double protective cage installed 1986 . If you let me know what time frame, deployed in Germany or Canadian version, as they looked different….. I can help you out, plus if you are looking for the best Reference on the market, there are digital reference sets available from Trackjam Models. The sets have the largest collection of photos and reference material, plus a complete list of modifications done to our tanks during the service life…. On the plus side there is a plastic kit planned in the future, there are resin turret conversions from Maple Leaf Models if you can find them, that have a fantastic detailed turret and cages….Feel free to message me anytime if you have any questions…..

Short answer yes, the turret basket was only on later C1s.

“Plastic kit” sounds intriguing.

Hi Richard,

Hopefully between my answer here and on Facebook will help you out. The early version used the smaller cage as only the PZB 200 was mounted.

If you build a mid version of the C1 you will need the larger protective cage for the IRS 100 and PZB 200. What is a mid C1 version you say? It would include the larger cage for the PZB and IRS, the angled armoured cable bracket on the glacis plate and armoured cable connection cover (these were phased in over time), and the added turret side storage racks.

The late version C1 would include the mid version details plus the add-on rear turret bustle rack, the welded on MEXAS mounts, and the reconfigured layout of the glacis plate grousers.

I’ll have a look in my stash just in case I can find a spare smaller cage if you are still looking for one for an early C1 build.

Keep asking questions when you have them. Have fun with your C1 build.

Hi Jason.

Many thanks for your help.Im hoping to do a couple of C1s.Definately not late one with the brass bending needed with the Legends conversion which is beyond me.Im using Italeri kits as i still have 9 in the stash.Im sure a kit will appear when im halfway through the build process!!.Ive still got the Afv modeller mags with your builds in,Albino cat,C1 early etc!!.

Nice to hear from you.

The Legend’s PE, etc. for the late version turret bustle bin wasn’t too hard to create on my C1 MEXAS. It just took preplanning. I hope you enjoy those Leopard articles…more of them to come!

I’m a bit late to the party on this one; Cold War modeller that I announce myself as, my interest in the Canadian component of the Central Region has been a bit hit and miss. There are Cents in the stash and a yearning to purchase Sylly’s Models Lynx, but that’s about as far as it’s got.

This thread though has reignited my interest - after all - Leopards? Yes please! So I started undertaking a little research, prompted by my stumbling over the Legend conversion kit for something like 25 quid - which was perfectly acceptable. However, once I started digging down - and digesting the various inputs on here - I realised that acquiring the set wasn’t a definite necessity. As it happens I have the Pzb sight in my stash, albeit destined for an early Leo 2, but amongst my - mainly Revell Leo 1 stash - the sight crops up in a number of kits - so no problem in what may have proved to be the most exacting construction challenge. Everything else seemed to be a matter of scratching; if one eschews the stowage rack, then most mods seem perfectly straightforward. Plus, of course, I like to add cam nets to my models, which I know may seem a cop-out, but to me, adds realism, yet can also facilitate an easier build!

Incidentally, if one requires the Pzb sight, Perfectscale Modellbau do one at an extremely reasonable price.

Further research led me to the Tankograd publication shown here (always inspirational for Cold War builds I find):

(Received today!)

Disappointingly perhaps, there was scant coverage of the 1A2 version briefly in Canadian service - kit wise - select Revell hull of choice, and add the Perfectscale Modellbau 1A2 turret:

Thereafter, excellent coverage of the C1:

I’m not suggesting that the Tankograd booklet is essential, but it’ll certainly help and give no small inspiration, especially if you display your models on a base or add figures.

Regrettably, I won’t be starting a build anytime soon; I’ll need a base kit to start with, and, forgive me if it’s already been covered, are decals of the black and white-outlined maple leaf readily available?

PS: I actually remember the Canadians at Soest in the early 70s; there was a military prison located there as well.

Great minds think alike Brian.I bought this book as well so im well armed with info and help from Jason and Anthony.I seem to recall Jason made a Canadian 1A2 awhile back or i could be imagining it.

I feel somewhat guilty over my neglect of the Canadians; I mean, post war they were there with at least a Brigade plus, but I’ve just never gotten around to tackling the models!

Mind you, my Dutch and Belgian efforts aren’t brilliant. Bundeswehr? More models than you can shake a stick at! Brits? Ooops.

And of course, the opposition: Sov? Some. Any other Warsaw Pact nations? 1 x East German BMP and that’s about it. All because I’ve become too organised historically chasing a theme.

My advice - which I could do with taking? Just build!

I forgot to emphasise my earlier question: the availability of Canadian decals with the white surround on the maple leaf?

Above & Below Decals in Canada make the Maple Leaf decals. They also make great sets of decals for Leopard C1’s and Leopard C2s.

I did indeed build a Canadian Leopard 1A2 Rent-a-Tank.
