“Checking out” 1/35

That is awesome, thanks. What thickness of wood are you using?

Great work!

I’ve been thinking about the door and the guy’s finger. Stand in your doorway and carefully push the door open with one finger. At what point in opening the door with one finger do you stop pushing and start creeping in? You have the door all the way open and he is stull pushing. Just a thought, not a criticism.

@Tank_1812 Ryan, your door is unfortunately off 1/35 scale. I made a mistake, it to high, but it work for this 1/32 figure.

image

The big balsa part is 1,5 mm and the thinner one is 1 mm. That’s a bit to thick for 1/35, it was because of this I cut an “angle” around the door.
2,5 mm in 1/35 = 87,5 mm in 1/1.
That gives an illusion of a less thick door.
I will get thinner balsa from my hobby store.

@TopSmith Greg, never mind the hand, if he will touch the door a will change to another hand. I have also considered another option, to place him in front, that’s better for a man who is pointing. If so, I place a third soldier inside the house, who is walking out.
I will change the background, so there will be more room in the entrance of the hotel. That means that the figure will be about 20 mm more inside the building then you see in these pictures.
What do you guys think of this “3 soldiers scene”?

Wonderful work of the door and a great description

Thanks for the information. The door no matter the scale looks great.

My intent was to help me sort out the thickness needed for myself not that your scale thickness was off.

the 3 figure option looks very good. and the third partially still in the hotel works really well, gives the whole scene a bit more character :+1: :+1:

Thanks guys!
I have decided to try making something extra with this build. I have a feeling that it could work out well.
I want to add a corner of the building and some more ground, not much but enough. Then I have to possibly to add more details and a tree or plant that I love do much:)

So I went out to the garage and grabbed some styrofoam and a jigsaw.

I have found the same dead German in another kit from Verlinden that I had.

This figure could I place were ever I want, so that was the reason to scratch build the whole thing over again.

I made new base, new walls etc, these walls will be replaced with blue styrofoam in the end. This is a mockup for the mockup you could say…

As you see I have given the third paras a more masculine tool…
I have also placed another dead German in the door opening. This is far away from a “drinking coffee diorama”.
To have a couple of bodies and show the brutality of war is no problem for me. That’s what it’s all about right!
Anyway I got inspired of one of my own mock-ups I made two years ago, unfortunately that one is still a mockup, and now I will steal some parts from it:
It’s named “The Spaghetti Massacre”

So now it’s British paras that are the killing machine instead of the Yankees.

As you understand this is still a mockup and the evolution of the vignette is running as you read this:)
There will be roof on the building, I think that will be a great detail.
Please tell me if you think this 2.0 setup is better or not than 1.0!
Cheers

Ryan, of course I understood that:) I was irritated to my self doing a simple mistake. But as you saw, that door could be of use with that 1/32 guy:) /Erik

Stop making people pick impossible options lol !!! Both version 1 and 2 are brilliant !! how can we decide haha …

Personally, I do not mind seeing the occasional dead body … we are talking war scenarios … not a picnic.

The first version was great in its own right and would of looked fantastic, so I wont labour on about that one. V2 is equally as good and just as thought provoking so no problems there. I would question the dead soldier in the door way. Maybe not needed ? or possibly not in the doorway in that position. If the Paras had been using the hotel for a fire base, they would of probably cleared that area of bodies before setting up inside ? just my thought on that, others may have other opinions, but as they say, “alls fair in love and war” … and its your dio … :+1:

The 3rd figure looks very good in that area with the Bren. You get the feeling he is lagging back letting the front 2 get clear of the building before he steps outside. And great you kept the chair, I do like that.

On the whole Erik … yet another great revamp on the original dio… the evolution continues …

And the “The Spaghetti Massacre” … you may hate me for it but … you have to try and finish that one … it looks great in the mock up … action packed and very dynamic :+1: :+1:

Thanks John:)
Damn, I should not bring old mock-ups to daylight…lol…
The reason for the German bodies in- and just outside of the building is that the Germans have made several attempts of storming the building.
I do like the guy in the door opening, especially as the para walks past him so carelessly.
I will go for v2, to have a corner gives opportunity for so many details like, gutter, road signs, plants etc.

And maybe I will go back to that Italian wine yard in 1943 and finish my pasta… :boom:

During lunchtime I made a test of making cobblestone out of styrofoam. I used both blue and black styrofoam. I am guessing that separate stones will be more realistic than if I make a pattern with a “stamp”.

Some edges is to sharp. I learned how to make some improvements, but that’s to be seen in a couple of days:)

Hmm, I really like the title “Checking out”, it’s the best title I got so far after “Death of the Commander”.
But but but, maybe but only maybe, a title like “House clear” or “Cleaning up” suits the look it has transformed to?
In that case it also possible to change from a hotel to something else, that also could be a part of the title. Example: Casino Royal or a type of shop.
What’s your thoughts about that?

Personal opinion, I like the checking out … it gives the impression the Paras, are finally “checking out” of the Hotel that has been their safe haven during the fire fight/battle and have lived to fight another day … looking at the vanquished as they walk past …

I concur. I’ve liked that title from the very beginning.

Okey okey! I keep the title:) I also think it’s great.

Tonight I started producing cobblestones out of black styrofoam. I cut them in 4x4 mm (=140mm 1/1). I primed the top side before I cut them apart, then it’s easier to know which side that should be upside.

Then I couldn’t refuse to start working.
I had to make a distance of 3 mm for the building because the cobblestones. I hadn’t thought about that…but that’s no problem for a man with a lot of styrofoam in stock

The stones are not finished yet, the painting is just a test. But actually I am quite satisfied with the outcome. Okey time to get some sleep after a hard days work. Cheers
