Indicators and sidelights for 70s+, side lights only before then, something like that.
Upgrades can take 20 years🤣
Ah right, I was thinking more along the lines of headlights. I think indicators on military vehicles came in to keep pace with the current road legislation. CVR(T) went the other way with headlights though as they started as sealed beam units (small headlights) which were expensive to replace to the large old fashioned headlights where a bulb cost pence.
Yep, standard 8in that 90% of the fleet had. Best thing they did.
The sealed was for the swimming part🤷
An ex-girlfriend of mine here in the States owns a bright pink Ferret that she tootles around town in. She loves driving it. She goes grocery shopping with it and gets any space she wants. It’s wicked cool.
I’ve posted this before, Rob a mate of mine owns a business refurbishing CVR(T) and Ferrets. He has done a lot of Ferrets for export to the US and told me once he can’t find enough hulls to refurbish they are in that much demand. Have a look at his for sale section, not huge I know but he does tracks, engines and spare parts also.
Managed to dig a few out…
We had 5 Ferrets in SHQ UNF 550 to 555.
We just took them over as one, so no one really had one as their ride. They were allocated a dedicated driver and that was it, as commanders, we just jumped in the nearest one that was ready to go and had a driver in it.
This is in the inner city patrol route on the green line buffer zone. The buildings on the left are the Turkish Cypriot side and the right side is the Greek Cypriot zone
We only ever drove round one way, with the Turkish side on our left. This one is me looking back with our SHQ Landrover that came out with us, in between me and the rear Ferret.
This is 3 of our wagons at the old Nicosia airport in the green zone an the UN base area.
And for giggle’s, the Scout car Sqn had to supply a LCpl and 3 trooper’s for a 4 day stint in manning Trumpton … This was our nickname for the UN base area fire engine … The most polished fire engine ever lol…
Now I just need that Ferret
Love seeing you guys post your memories. Adds a lot more to a picture that way.
Nice series of pics John.
Cheers Peter… It was a fun filled, alcohol consuming tour lol…
I remembered while looking at the pics after reading your post that in the Landrover pic above, where the rear Ferret is, is the crest of a perfect ramp. When we just went out with 2 Ferrets we would sometime take a run and hit it at max speed and you could get complete air in the Ferret for about 10 to 15 feet depending on speed and how you hit the take off… Not for the feint hearted… And you had to be braced well lol … Then after the patrol we’d hit CanCon and the Ledra Palace Hotel and the best all day breakfast done by the Canadian cooks
Do you remember this place in Nicosia. I spent so Much money in Queen Anna Maria Bar on dirty street.
Jesus …sadly I do… But we do not want to go there lol… And followed by the biggest meze at a restaurant a few streets over owned by the bloke who owned the taxi firm we always booked for everyone who needed one in the Sqn when they went down town … Very good times …
Still a good laugh in civvies or in uniform…
Yeah. Tim the owner cranked it up to top speed on his track, as well as going through the rough corrugated areas, so was a lot of fun seeing how it performed. Certainly not built for crew comfort though.
Not Judging, but is our photographer carrying a handbag?
Haha not guilty on that account. I got that pic online, no way would I take a pic of one of the most infamous haunts most blokes in Britcon went to. Plausible deniability to the long haired sergeant major and all that!!
Well this is looking very nice👍
05CC99 was my ride in Tidworth although that was a Mk4 with the big wheels and flotation screen.
You could still do your wagon using Accurate Armours kit. I’m not sure if this was a forerunner of the Fox or whether it was developed in tandom.
I’ve been tempted mate but too much in the stash at the moment to justify that spend
They are nice quick builds , and worth it if you’re doing one of your drives,
Maximus , completely different build of vehicle to make a Fox, comparisons have been made, and proved wrong on other sites.
How much difference does the radio type installation make in the vehicle? I’ve worked with multiple US radio systems, and externally it is pretty much impossible to tell the radio types installed aside from a few VERY different systems: HF, FM, or SATCOM. Otherwise, only the number of radios installed can be deduced.
Externally it would really be the type of ABAs that are fitted. Internally if it was clansman, they could have 1 or 2 veh fit 353s fitted. In Cyprus we only had 1 radio fitted as we only had one working net … In Germany the SCMs Ferret had 2 fitted as he would usually be on the Sqn Net and one on the admin net…
Not sure about Larkspur and their fit outs… You’ll have to ask a real old dinosaur … Enter left Brian @BootsDMS lol… Sorry mate … Only kidding
