Cutting mat maintenance?

Use the side cutters, needle files and sandpaper/polishing sticks more
and use the sharp blades less.

Carving away at a model with a knife is reminiscent of 7 - 9 year old boys
using a semi-sharp pocket knife to build an Airfix 1/72 Spitfire (sold in a plastic bag).

I still have that pocket knife somewhere, I had learned to sharpen it so it was
razor sharp when my 9 year older brother wanted to borrow it.
I warned him that it was ‘sharp as h*ll’, he said ‘Yeah, yeah …’
and five minutes later he came complaining, with a bleeding finger,
about the ‘effing sharp blade’.
I answered: I told you so …

When a knife is absolutely needed, use scalpel blades mounted in flat handles:

These blades are NOT to be used for heavier cutting, such as sprues.
Use side cutters or maybe saws for the heavy work.

Scalpels… yup. I started using these just recently and find them to be very sharp, easy to control and comfortable in the hand. Definitely worth a try. … Not tossing my X-Acto blades, they still have their own [lace at the table.
