Nice progress G … the wash aways look great … and its always good to see the Tank Commander in all his glory !!
Thanks to Ryan and John, I’ll give stretched sprue a go, see if I can make it work,
.
G,
Hi all,
Gave the dunes a lick of paint, once its dry I’ll have a go at matching it up to the other side of the stream,
.
I’ve also added washed up debris to the high water mark, living more-or-less on a beach, this is a feature I often see after stormy weather…and the weather in-and-around D-Day was poor.
I’m trying to find a D-Day era British Churchill tank in 1/72nd scale, , I can find several MK III, and a number of 1/76th scale kits, but the only one that seems suitable is the Dragon CHURCHILL MK.IV 76mm D7507, and that seems difficult to track down,
.
Any other suggestions?
Cheers, ,
G
Not sure if these are any good ?
not sure if MkIII was there ? or …
or …
Thanks John, I’m trying to find out if the MK. III Churchill was used on D-Day. One site seems to indicate that it might have been, but not sure…so if anyone does know, yay-or-nay, please let me know as it would be the easiest option for my diorama,
.
G,
Hi. The Churchill gun tanks did not participate on D-Day and the immediate days after, only the dedicated ‘funnies’.
Churchills were heavy Infantry Tanks and allocated to Independent Tank Brigades, not Armoured Brigades. As such, they were not landed in France until weeks after D-Day. There were 2 Tank Brigades equipped with Churchill Mk III’s in June 1944 - 31st Tank Brigade and 34th Tank Brigade.
The 31st Tank Brigade were landed on Juno Beach on 19 - 21 June 1944.
Elements of the 34th Tank Brigade were landed 16 June, but most of the Brigade did not arrive until 3 July.
Cheers
Thanks for taking the time to give the detailed feedback Peter, guess that rules out any none specialist Churchill,
. Methinks my only option is the Revell 1/72nd Cromwell, or maybe the Airfix Sherman Firefly,
.
Thanks again, your help is much appreciated,
.
G,
Not sure how that Jeep got in there … it should have been a Cromwell !!
Hi all,
Decided to have a bit of a play, thought it might add interest to add a Churchill ‘Bobbin’ canvas carpet to try and break up the expanse of ‘sand’,
.
I’ve taken some images incorporating the 1/72nd Revell Cromwell that I used on my ‘Bocage’ diorama…just to give some interest,
…it won’t be used for this diorama,
.
Cheers, ,
G
Speaking of the A27s, how difficult would it be to convert a Cromwell to one of those Royal Marines Armoured Support Group Centaur IVs that were allegedly not supposed to go ashore but were, in fact, equipped to do so?
From Wiki -
"Each Battery consisted of four troops, with each troop equipped with four Centaur and one Sherman tank, giving a total of 80 Centaur and 20 Sherman tanks in the group, which fought on the British and Canadian D-Day beaches.
- 1st Royal Marine Armoured Support Regiment at Gold Beach comprising the 1st Battery (A, B, C and D Troops) and the 2nd Battery (E, F, G and H Troops).
- 2nd Royal Marine Armoured Support Regiment at Juno Beach comprising the 3rd Battery (J, K, L and M Troops) and the 4th Battery (N, O, P and Q Troops).
- 5th Royal Marine Independent Armoured Support Battery at Sword Beach comprising R, S, T and V Troops.[5] The wartime RMASG was disbanded two weeks after D-Day (D+14).
Regards,
M
Nice idea Tom,
. But rather than convert, I’d forgotten that IBG already do one…
I also spotted that they did a Centaur Dozer…
If they were used on D-Day I could have it dozing the beach obstacles,
.
Thanks again for the idea,
G,
Sorry, it seems the Dozer was a very Late War innovation, not around until 1945?
Cheers,
M
Thanks for the feedback Tom, shame it wasn’t used, but you checking it out is much appreciated,
.
I’ll see if I can pick up a Centaur though, it’s a great idea of yours, and something slightly different, .
G,
Think I’ve still got the old Tamiya 1/35th version from way back in the 90s stored somewhere Tom…a rave from the grave,
. Hope the IBG version has the decals for the turret…as seen on the image you provided,
.
G,
You can get decals from evil bay and possibly Hannants mate
Oh yes, they could be a pain otherwise.
Apparently that tank in the photo belonged to V Troop of the 5th Independent Battery of the RMASG and it landed on D-Day at Sword Beach. It made about 500 yards from the beach before it was K.O. by mortars and caught fire, and remained in a hedge until 1975 when it was recovered and extensively restored.
Cheers,
M
Thanks for the heads-up John,
. Just checked out the IBG instructions on their website and it shows the decals being incorporated in the kit,
.
G,
“old…way back in the 90’s…” Wow you make me feel ancient. I was polishing my 12th pair of army boots back in the 90’s!
Get some time in Matthew, get some time in(!)
