D Day -- -- D+80 Years

According to the caption; this Sherman is from 13th/18th Royal Hussars. The tank’s name is “Balaclava”.

You can see in the distance a pair of British Horsa Gliders. (disregard; this one is a Sherman MkIII, not a VC)

Decal sheet from Star Decals, showing the markings for “Balaclava”.

Fireflies from 3rd County of London Yeomanry (Sharpshooters) fresh off Sword Beach.

This is the photo I was looking for: Imperial War Museum B 5105.

According to the caption in Sherman Firefly by Mark Hayward, this is another picture of “Carole”, embarded on a Landing Craft Tank on June 6, making the journey towards the beach.

Edit: Unfortunately, I just noticed “Carole” has a wading trunk so that one is out.

You might want to look into some of the Canadian ones that landed on Juno. They were offloaded directly onto the beaches and I do not believe they had wading trunks

Some great research and info going around and we still have 4 and a bit months left before the start date …
I am now thinking of possibly doing an M10 GMC … I know Academy do one with D Day markings …

Yep. I built the one you’re talking about. The older version anyways…

Is a good kit. I added a sandbagged front, a hedgerow cutter and assorted stowage to it.

Both American and British used M10s at Normandy. It’ll be a matter of markings.

This is the one I found with markings for the landing …

Yep. It’s the same kit, but new parts and new box art. My kit is from 2002, this kit is from 2014, according to Scalemates.

Cool, I may end up getting that then, with some stowage aftermarket … :+1:

What new parts did it include?

I did the Achilles when it first came and really enjoyed that build. Had to scratch new ammunition racks and source 17pdr shells, but that was part of the fun.

I harvested the Hedgerow cutter from the Asuka M4A1 Normandy Sherman kit.

I based my build on this picture.

Now Im thinking the hedgerow cutters would of been additions after the 6th when they ventured into the bocage areas and began the fighting there ??

They mainly used the scrap steel from Czech Hedgehogs, used as beach defenses, and thanks to the genius of an American GI, last name Cullin; were able to devise a simple, yet very effective tool to cut through the thick hedgerows and getting into open terrain, as to being bogged out in the narrow farm roads in and around Normandy.

I have a recently finished kit and nearly finished set of figures that I am planning to use on a D-Day diorama. Is that something too far along, or would it qualify for here?

I think I will try Carole. As I have the Tasca kit 35-11 and some where the Archer decals for it.

I like @Stikpusher Carlos’s photo without the stack.

I might try a wading stack but that photo is my fallback position without one.

Do plan to order the panda tracks soon.

Here is what I have so far for the build.

This is a really good Canadian account on Juno.

I am building a 12th SS Panzer IV Ausf H Panzerbefehlswagen, however I’m more than 20% completed.

If you leave it now until the start date I am sure it will be within the limits … even more so as I just changed it to 25%

Looking at the dates I won’t do the Panzer IV. I really would like to get one model under my belt.

I have on my build radar a 12th SSHJ; Sd.Kfz.251/3 IV Ausf. D DHQ. How about if I add this one?

They would of been in the area late on the 6th of June so that would fit in fine :+1:

I’ve settled on a kit. I will build the Trumpeter USS England as either USS Rich or USS Bates (the only 2 Buckley class Destroyer Escorts involved) both of which were part of the screening force for larger ships hitting Utah beach with artillery.

It will be my first ship, I have the WEM PE set as well as metal guns for the 20mm. I now have lots of time to research colors and such
