Thank God for Tamiya-simplicity.
Gut-wrenching John. I feel your pain, pressing down on one end while the other end pops up, not allowing a bonding surface for the glue…having liquid cement run under masking tape…working against spring tension while trying to fit precision parts…the horror.
This update depresses me greatly as I have the AFV Club Churchill AVRE kit in the stash, with a PE set and Friul tracks, calling my name lately. It’s a bang-up kit, but now…
I’m leaning toward the ILK DUKW for this campaign. We’ll see. It will be a couple of months before I can start. I’ve got at least 3 projects in the queue before that one. I do have PE and Thatchweave bumpers for it though so it should be a good build.
Sorry about the Churchill suspension. What was AFV thinking? Like we’ve got 4 hands or something?
Please do this one, I would like to see how it goes together.
Well, normally I don’t take requests, but for you Ryan, okay, because you’re special.
Truer words were never spoken
That DUKW sounds nice Matt and along with Ryan wouldn’t mind seeing that built up…
I was pretty disappointed with the running gear sections, and it is going to take time to build them up but it won’t worry me again. I think it just blind sided me initially that it was so much drama to get it built … definitely over thought in my opinion… It has pluses as a kit, like with most AFV kits it seems nicely detailed.
I cracked on with the running gear section and decided to build up one as a whole, then do the other one, not both together as the instructions say.
Road wheels, rear panel, and the 2 front rails are now on.
I think the 2nd one will be easier this time round now I am prepped for it and have a plan of action to make the build process smoother…
Bit more building …
Slow process as some of these parts are small and fiddly… Also, some are fragile as they are joined to the sprues at 3 or more points, and delicate so when trying to remove them, they got
stress bends and there were a few bits that snapped, but all got fixed…
Got some more done on the RH side running gear
Once I’ve finished this bit I can get the lower hull started
The back section on the lower hull is finished… Nice and easy, PE gives it a nice look.
Next, starting the upper hull.
Just finishing the Summer vacation - spend 3 days in Normandy. Absolutely beautiful and historically great.
Picked up some kits with Normandy markings, so I will be making one or more of these for this campaign
Sounds good Jesper … Looking forward to it
Was thinking … Is there anyone who is up to speed with designing a campaign medal ? Its not a big priority for me, but I know some people like them.
If anyone has the skills to design one in the required format and along the lines of D Day +80 … I would be more than happy to have it to award for completed builds
have a word with Petbat, he might be able to help you
Found this while buying paint for another build. Never built armour from Revell before. First acquaintance suggests an old kit (edit:Scalemates says old Matchbox kit from 1983), plastic is soft, injection gates are large and part numbering almost impossible to see. Fit so far is pretty good, but I can’t assemble too much as the only colour I don’t have is bronze green. Will build it as a unit of 5th Assault Regt, 79th Armoured Divn, landed on Juno Beach around 09:00 on 6th June. I will use this in my refit of my LCT(5), I already have two AVRE Churchills for it, now need a Sherman Crab.
LCT2477 as she is now, she needs a repaint, new steering linkage, new bridge rails, Oerlikon and armour on port side, the Churchill Crocodiles replaced with AVRE and Sherman Crab.

The AVRE looks to be a 1983 Matchbox kit.
Fitted the upper hull area… Smaller detail parts to be fitted next and then front section of glacis area
Almost forgot the counter weights for the fascine needed to be added to the inside rear before I put the front hull section on…
2 large flat stones with a slavering of gorilla glue …
Well you’re in luck Andrew as Bronze Green is a post war color and your AVRE wouldn’t be painted that. It would most likely be SCC2 Brown, or slightly possibly SCC15 Olive Drab, but most probably SCC2 Brown.
Ah, I knew green pigment was almost unobtainable in Britain during at least part of the war, but didn’t know what the substitute colour looked like. As a ship modeller I have spent hours confirming LCT Colour schemes for various parts of the war but not vehicles. SCC2 Brown sounds a similar colour to WW1 PC10 used on aircraft in which the pigments were lamp black and ochre, giving a chocolate colour, my nearest is Tamiya Khaki Drab. What colour (apart from MIG colour which I would still have to go and buy) is SCC2 Brown?
