Right! Get some coffee or Hot Chocolate and head for the modeling desk.

Those were the days! Between Dick’s, Hobby World, that shop in the Rickel Mall on Sunrise Highway, and (once I got a car) the stores in Port Jeff and (I think?) Medford (Wargaming place, can’t remember the name) I was surrounded by modelling goodness. Sadly these days in London, UK real shops are as rare as hen’s teeth…

Yes they were. Bayshore hobbies is still in bayshore but I haven’t been there in years because the place is a death trap. Models stacked on the floor over 6 feet high (I’m 5’8”) and you can’t get to the ones on the shelves. It’s difficult to get down the aisle and I’m not fat ! He was warned by the fire Marshall about it but hasn’t done anything about it. There’s a storage facility right across the street. He’s big on Remote Control stuff and trains. Then there’s Baseline in Babylon and Men at Arms in Middle Island. Willis hobbies is still in Mineola. I’m very fortunate to have 4 hobby shops around me. There was one down the block from me in Medford but I’ve only been in there once in 23 years , he didn’t have any armor really. Don’t even know if he’s still there.

“Men at Arms” - that’s the name I was searching for! And you’re right about Bay Shore being a mess - my brother goes there a lot and I get the stories. Been there when it was still safe to travel (in the days BC - that’s not Before Christ, but Before Covid) and there were goodies to be had if you could dig enough to find them. But tie a string to your belt so the rescuers can follow it to dig you out of the avalanche!

It’s a shame because Bayshore had a large armor section. The old Dragon models are on the very top shelf but haven’t been touched in probably a decade if not more. The reason I can tell ? The boxes are faded to nearly white being so close to the fluorescent lights lol. He also has a large selection of Verlinden and Warriors stuff- but you have to ask for permission to go behind the counter to sort through the stuff. Last time I looked at the resin stuff there was a lot of hard to find verlinden stuff. Should have scooped it all up at the time. Unreal !

I’d go for a root canal.

Not a fan of shoveling snow , but one thing I hate is raking leaves. Used to do it myself with my kids help but now I just hire someone lol. That and weeding…. although the weather is always nicer when doing the latter two !

How could you not be enamored by the joys of weeding? That is one of the national pastimes! What are we coming to? Sad. It is such an opportunity to get in tune with nature. Experience the flora and fauna, setting the example for all the youth in your neighborhood.

Whaaat? With all due respect and I mean that sincerely, you guys are flippin’ nuts! I moved from the sweltering deep south to the Appalachian foothills 20 years ago and I’ve come to realize that snow looks great on post cards and calendars period! Power outage for four to six days, supervisor at work shameing you because you won’t risk life and limb much less your 2wd tire spinning truck to come to work, no thanks! How’s that root canal going? Now Hawaii? Yeah that’s the ticket! Bikinis or snow bunnies? Hmmm . . . nice taut golden tanned oiled bodies or blue toes under the sheets with a red runny nose squealing “let’s just cuddle!”. LOL, I hope this 'nor easter melts off ASAP!

CAJUN :crocodile:

I remember when Baseline was in Mineola. I went there on a regular basis right after a session at Britt’s basement range. Is Don still with Baseline? I know he had a weekend place in PA. To me Willis Hobbies was very weak on armor but better than nothing if you needed paint.

Yes you are correct. He had a place up in the Poconos I think. Don was there in mineola then sold it to a guy named Eric who moved it to Babylon. Don was a very angry guy the last few years before he sold lol. He used to say to me “this is a dead hobby !!”. Probably because of internet sales and such. I routinely spent $100 a month at his place for years until I couldn’t anymore. That building has been demolished with all the new work going on on Main St.

Willis has a small armor section with good stuff though. His prices are sky high though. I just bought some AK Real Colors there but that’s it. Tons of RC stuff though.

metalhead85,

Before you clear it all away, take plenty of photos for references for a future snow diorama!

Hit the modeling desk. Spring will come around and melt the snow, the models won’t build them selves.

Wow. All this talk of Lawn Guyland is bringing back memories. For a while I lived a beach house in Northport. There was a place in town called Skipper’s. When they saw my name the owner said the meals and drinks were on him one night. I never knew there were so many shops around the area as I sort of had a hiatus from modeling for a few years. Moved to Huntington behind Walt Whitman’s house and went to Farmingdale for a year.
