Dodge WC-51 3/4 Ton Truck

I should have posted this last week after I start it at AMPS on the 8th, but I didn’t take photos until yesterday. This is the Testors-Italeri rebox of the mid 1970’s vintage Max kit. It has parts so you can make either the WC-51 or WC-52, the difference being a front bumper mounted winch on the WC-52. Anyways, I decided to go with the WC-51 version. Aside from clean up of mold ejector pin marks and mold seam lines, this is a pretty simple straightforward kit so far. I built the M6 GMC/WC-55 version long ago, but have zero memory of any issues with assembly on that one. So after roughly three hours work at the AMPS meeting, I have perhaps 2/3 of the main assembly completed.

Once I get my current F-16 project wrapped up, I’ll knuckle down on this one…

I love these old Dodges!

You and me both. It’s a pretty functional solid design. I have a few more of the series to tackle after this one.

Nice solid build Carlos. These old Peerless kits can look damn good with a little modeling effort.

I have Airfix’ Dodge Personel carrier with the double rearaxles in the stash. The idea is to depict that with a hitched M1 AT-gun.

@SSGToms , agreed! They may not be the latest and greatest, but they are not too shabby either.

@RonW , that sounds like a great plan with your WC-61/62. I’ll likely build mine as a stand alone.

Nice build, and I love that truck too. I often used to drove that truck. not exactly WC-51 Dodge truck, but it is a direct descendant.

Looks great. Definitely an oldie but a goodie.

Not at all. That is the ROK K311, which is a license-built (modified) version of the Willys/Kaiser Jeep M715 truck. There is no linkage between the Dodge WC series and the K311, even though in the ROK it is sometimes called a Military Dodge.

I’ve built a couple of those Peerless Dodges, not as easy a build as a Tamiya kit, but they do look nice when finished.

Post above made me think, does anyone make an M715 kit? I don’t think I’ve ever seen one.

…does anyone make an M715 kit?

Unfortunately, no. There are 3D printable kits, but I haven’t tried one yet. Maybe someday.

This past Saturday at AMPS I wrapped up the major construction on this build

I left the front engine and dash portion separate for now for painting purposes, but put the wheels and front on for a test fit and the photos

I’ll have more progress photos later in the week… after I start painting and get the final bits glued on…

Since I had my airbrush out yesterday for work on my P-35 project, I also did some work on this one. Mostly getting the areas that will be harder to paint at the end after final assembly such as the underside and drivers area…

I used AK Real Colors Dark Olive Drab 22. I’m planning on doing fading later with Real Colors faded Olive Drab, after a solid overall base of the OD 22.

it looks great. Im not enamored of tracks and tanks like so many others - I actually like wheeled vehicles better. Ill keep an eye out for that kit.

Thanls for posting

If you want a WC-51 or 52, or the WC-54 ambulance, the new Zvezda kits are light years better than the old Lifelike \ Peerless \ Italeri ones.

Pity where they are made…

Yes that’s true. You have to do a little soul searching on whether to buy them or not. They are readily available on the EBay store of a little shop in Estonia called Hobby4You for really great prices and low, fast shipping if you want them.

Yeah but I already have most of those in my stash now… I know the new stuff is better detailed, but the older ones do have ease of assembly going for them.

Yesterday was our So Cal AMPS Zoom meeting so I did more work on my WC 3/4 Ton, including finishing up getting the basic OD paint airbrushed on. Steve Munsel From Value Gear showed me how he makes his items at at AZ AMPS meeting late last year, so I followed his example using Milliput to make a tarp for the windshield and a rolled tarp onto the fender. It wasn’t too difficult to do.

Steve does make it look easy.

Yes he does! Quite enlightening to watch how he creates his products.

Today I did some more work on this project… First up I did some touch ups on the OD that had become stained from the putty tarps, then I painted the epoxy tarps that I added to the windshield and fender

Next I added a couple of jerry can holders from my spares bins onto the sponsons… I didn’t like the jerry cans with molded on holders that came with the kit

I used some aircraft instrument decals for the dashboard instruments

And lastly I primed up some Value Gear stowage that I’m planning to use in the cargo bed, and gave it a test fit
