There used to be a resin kit many moons ago …
Only vaguely related, a red civilian RHD Daf 66 drove past me on Saturday - my slack-jawed stare in amazement at seeing such a rarity garnered a friendly wave from the driver - he must be used to it ![]()
MR Modellbau do one in resin and whitemetal; still available. Fan Kit Models also do one; I have both in the stash as yet unmolested.
I am sure Sylly’s Models are working on one - an iconic vehicle of the 60s/70s. I recall seeing them in Hohne in the northern part of the British Zone back in the day. Very distinctive.
At about 7:05? A YP-408.
There have been few, but none of them actually good, really. See here for one example.
Technically there is no APC; the tracked vehicle with the 25mm is a recce vehicle. Whilst busy - and I admit possibly maxed out - it makes sense to beef up the Prince’s escort a bit. The 70s was the time of fairly energetic South Moluccan terrorism in Holland and knobbling such a dignitary would be no small coup. It is also typical of what the military would do I suspect, plus it was new kit - or at least with the cannon sponson fitted - and one wouldn’t wish to miss an opportunity to show it off.
“Yes” I agree that the MBT-70 is meant to be the centre of attention, but I feel the whole will be interesting in any case, and still point the viewer in the right direction; the story should (should!) be self-evident, and that will be down to me!
I also found time today to begin tackling work on Prince Bernhard. I’ve sanded down lots of detail on the Tamiya Patton figure but still have a way to go. The boots will require extensive work, not least adding laces from stretched sprue.
I selected a Hornet Head from their British Officers set. He looks a bit youthful but was the only head which had the cap cocked slightly, which I note HRH was wont to do. I’ll attend to the jawline with some Mr Dissolved Putty; once the sunglasses (FC Model Trend) are added I think he’ll do.
The trousers will benefit from some attention where they’re rumpled at the bottom; I may be able to do that with Magic Sculp. Further badges and an aiguillette are all to follow:
I should be able to get there.
As a welcome aside, for all those aspirant MBT-70 fans out there, I just picked this up from the Modelling News site:
TMN: Kit countdown… Clayton’s top ten upcoming releases of the month…
I wouldn’t let me copy the pics, but essentially, amongst some dinosaurs and Italian tanks, it’s Dragon box art in any case, but the MBT-70 will be released - I didn’t quite discover the timescale - by “DRAMi”, so that’s good news for those modellers who wish to say, pursue a similar beast to mine, or even a Belgian version. Of course, one could always undertake the plain vanilla German one!
The box art is also on Scalemates. That page indicates it will have new parts, but not a clue what — I’ll just assume it has nothing that isn’t in the Dragon kit until proven wrong, though. A comment also says it was being sold at a Chinese model show about three weeks ago.
I’ve been working on one of the extra vehicles for the scene, the DAF YA-66 from Sylly’s Models – a 3D printed kit.
Pretty easy to put together and not very many parts, all detailed and beautifully modelled. I’ll need to get the sequence right, not least in fitting the transparencies and the painting schedule. There’s an awful lot of visibility, so inevitably I’ll have to fill it with what makes sense.
It’s an exercise, so I’m assuming a vehicle tool kit (probably a standard fit anyway), which will contain say, a tools wallet, a jack, convoy flags and a tow rope. I should be able to make all that. A fuel jerrican would make sense, as would a camouflage net; there will be a vehicle first aid kit somewhere in the vehicle I’m sure.
A Driver figure has also been receiving some attention, although not much at this stage. The Prince figure is coming along too, hands and bootlaces to be added shortly.
If one of the DAF’s was used to drive Prins Bernhard around, I don’t think you’d need to fill her up. I’m sure HRH would prefer to see the real thing, but I’m also pretty sure that once people found out they’d be driving royalty around, the car to be used would get cleaned pretty quickly. No way they would allow his not very uniform uniform to be driven around on a muddy seat. ![]()
I’m looking forward to seeing the figures from Sylly painted up. There’s a few I’ve been eyeing, so I would like to see them in paint.
Indeed! To royalty the world smells of fresh paint…
It just occurred to me that in the second picture in post 20 above, the track chevrons point the “wrong” way round - competition judges, take note! And I think I remember having seen that somewhere here before, also on a Dutch Leo, but can’t remember where.
Ditto this - or am I being particularly dense this morning?
The Driver will probably be the first Sylly’s figure to paint up, as I too am keen to see what I can make of it. The poses of his figures are just great, but the faces seem to be a bit devoid of definition. We’ll see what I can do with them; I’m committed in any case.
They abound Peter; the Tankograd series has several shots of this - certainly on German Leopards.
What I meant was that the interior of the vehicle would be quite clean and devoid of clutter if it was used to ferry the Prince around. Obviously he would appreciate a full tank of gas. ![]()
as would most of us …
Not me! My car’s a diesel… ![]()
Oh, sure. Well, the DAF will take 3 passengers: the Prince, his Military Assistant/ADC, and in this scenario, the Commanding Officer of the unit involved. There is still room in the rear of the vehicle to depict the vehicle tool kit, convoy flags, cam net and a jerrican. That would have been Standing Operating Procedure I’m sure, although there’s a danger of me mapping across too much Brit Army thinking, but seems logical to me. for any vehicle on any exercise.
Definitely me being dense and confused today(!)
Its funny how Dutch uniforms look soo much like British uniforms
