Well, I was going to start the Scammell Commander now I have finished the F4 Phantom, but I decided to join in with the Getting Hitched campaign but that doesn’t start until Jan 25, so I needed something OOB to tide me over… So this is it.
I will be building slightly out of sequence as I want to build the whole main body (less running boards), then add the Zimm decals.
They look very similar to the DEF models ones so will work with them and they should be ok.
I wanted to get the casement on, but the hull tub had a bit of warping that needed addressing once the engine decks were on. Masking tape seems to have fixed it.
It will be needing a bit of plastic putty to fill/level a couple of areas.
Similar to the DEF Zimm decals, but these are mega brittle, and a fair few broke, but luckily, they generally broke or split in the vertical so it was easy to match them back up.
They all got hit with multiple passes of Micro Sol, and will do that again in the morning as I’m at home tomorrow taking a day’s leave.
Great start Johnny. Looks like a very nice kit. The details look very nice as does the zimmerit. Any idea how this kit stacks up quality wise with other companies kits if this vehicle?
I have the Dragon kit in my stash.
Thanks Richard. The Zimm settled perfectly overnight, so didnt need to reapply Micro Sol this morning. The kit ?? … well its ok, and price wise it comes in cheap compared the bigger brands and I cant really judge those as I dont have them, and wont be doing another one after this. After another look over this earlier, the detail does seem ok and should look decent enough once the paint goes on. No major fit issues, there was a minor warp in the lower hull, but that was easy to sort and its all good now. It will require a very small amount of plasti putty but equally you could do a few layers of super glue to fill/level that small area.
It has link and length track which I am not a fan of but I willl work with it. Obviously there is a lot more to do on this, but now the Zimm is on, I can start adding the external details to move it forward. It does come with clear plastic for the vision blocks as well.
A few more parts and decals added. Front MG armoured plate and suspension units, rear bin etc. Casement is still dry fit as I need to add the top detailing on the roof.
Few more bits and pieces. Casement is now fitted. No issues with the gun moving to much … The armoured manlet tightened everything up so barrel stays in whatever position you put it.
I built this kit a couple years ago and the hull came slightly bent out of shape so I had some difficulties when gluing it to the casemate…had to use quite a nice amount of styrene pieces and Tamiya putty…
Glad to see yours came perfectly straight. Keep up the good work.
Regards
Carlos
First time I have ever tried it, but I attempted to put a bit of cast texture on the upper casement…
Not sure how it looks, but to me it seems ok. The sides as they were just looked to perfectly flat and smooth.
