Festival San Bernabe Logroño

my wife and I are in Logroño northern Spain and the festival of San Bernabe is taking place over the next few days and there many events planned for the anniversary of the battle in 1521 and was between the French and Spanish.

there are lots of little stalls selling food and wine as well as jewellery and wine, cheese and wine, souvenirs and wine, oh and the occasional wine seller…did i mention the wine by the way?

we witnessed some period dressed people dancing in the style of the time. (i thought it might be funny if they broke out and some K-pop gang nam style dancing)

there are plenty of flags and banners hanging in the streets and they’re not the cheap nylon or plastic ones but are made from heavy duty cloth

the Spanish troops marched up to the San Bernabe gate for the start of the festival

the Mayor of Logroño fired the cannon to start the festival of San Beranbe and the period soldiers of both sides marched down to their encampments.

oh and lets not forget the wine merchants

arrival at the encampments, this is the French camp, whilst their you were encouraged to try the swords, armour and helmets. you quickly discover how heavy some of this stuff is.

onto the Spanish encampment where a similar attitude to hands on history was encouraged.

this evening there was a small jousting tournament, the basic story is the Frenchman has captured two brothers from Logroño and the Spanish champion challenged the Frenchman to a contest, being the bad guy the Frenchman cheats a little but looses in the end to the plucky young Spanish chap.
