Third set of notes from buying Japanese kits through a forwarder, and this one is about the thing that cost me the most money before I understood it — not the kits, not the service fee, the box.
Every international carrier bills you on the greater of two numbers: actual weight, and volumetric weight, which is length × width × height divided by a fixed divisor. For a modeller this is a much worse deal than it sounds, because our boxes are mostly air. A 1/35 armour kit is a large flat carton of sprues weighing well under a kilo. A carrier does not care that it is light. It charges for the space.
Three things I have learned the hard way:
Do not consolidate the way you would for books. The instinct is to batch as much as possible into one shipment. But if consolidating pushes the parcel’s dimensions into the next band, you can pay more for one box than you would have for two. I now check the rough carton dimensions before I decide what ships together, not after.
Big-box kits are the ones to think twice about. A 1/32 aircraft or a large-scale ship kit can price out as double or triple its actual weight. That does not mean don’t buy it — it means the shipping number belongs in your decision at the moment you are looking at the listing, not as a surprise at the end. Two 1/48 kits often ship for less than one 1/32.
Sea mail is genuinely worth it for bulky stuff. It is slow — think weeks, not days — but on a large low-density parcel the saving is not marginal, it is the difference between “worth importing” and “not worth importing”. For a stash you are not going to build for a year anyway, the wait costs you nothing real.
The related one, which has bitten people on this forum before: paints, cements and anything aerosol cannot go by air at all. They are classed as dangerous goods. If you are ordering a kit and its recommended paint set together, the paint has to be dropped or the whole shipment gets rejected. Buy the kit from Japan and the paint locally.

The forwarder I use is OneMall — there are several and the mechanics are the same. The feature that matters for this particular problem is the free storage window, because it lets you hold kits in the warehouse and choose your box shape rather than shipping each one as it arrives.
Curious whether anyone here has actually run the numbers on sea mail for a big stash order. I have only done it twice and both times it worked out well, but two data points is not a pattern.
