I’m going to build this 1975 era Airfix kit and make some minor improvements using the remaining Photoetched Parts and leftover options from my S100 build two years ago, (never throw anything away} I made the I love Kit 1/700 Bismarck earlier this year and what a mare that was, this being 1/72 should be less nightmarish
Hull basics, some of these kits come with bent hull parts, but this one was ok, it’s box was long enough.
hull fit at the Stern, no issues there.
get these basic fits right, as they form the basis of a good build.
“Grauwolf” did an excellent job of completely rebuilding and correcting this kit, but I don’t know if he ever posted any build-shots of it. I don’t know what parts from an S100 could be used on the early war varient - they were just too different, and that Revell S100 needed all the help it could get!
" I made the I love Kit 1/700 Bismarck earlier this year and what a mare that was,…"
I believe that was originally the Trumpeter kit, so "nuff said!
this awful coiled rope looks more like something I’ve trained my cat to do in the litter tray.
going…
going…
Gone, a Sailor would never leave a rope on deck like that, anyway it was thick enough to tow the Grey Ghost.
Will be watching this build. Like a lot of people, I’ve got one in the stash. So I’ll be watching out for any tips and tricks that will help make a better model from it.
Bit late to the party, I remember building this when it first came out as a 15 yr oold. it is great to see this old kit being give some proper treatment. Will be along for the ride.
Cheers. Si
Thanks for the supportive comments all, this is going to be a in depth build thread, so a warts and all blog,
I painted the hull bottom black, masked it when it was dry and sprayed the upper hull light grey.
Will be following this build. I wish the after market companies had paid some attention to this and the Airfix Vosper kit. They build into really nice models.
once the hull is unmasked, time to fit rudders and propeller shafts, but not the prop blades, too fragile at this stage.
Another good kit, but the mould is looking a little worse for wear these days and needs a lot of tidying up. A good contender for a retool though. Obviously a market if Revell did those really nice new S-Boots and PT’s.
The RAF Rescue Launch is another good one.
The new Shannon class RNLI boat is fantastic by all accounts. Must look at picking one up for something a bit different on the shelf.
I had the PE set from Eduard for the Revell S 100, plenty of spare hinges and brackets left on the pe frames for use with this old Airfix kit.
The kit anchor made up.
I know there are some incorrect areas of this kit, like the bow bulkhead door should be off to one side, but I’m choosing what battles to fight, one’s I can win with my limited modelling abilities.
I’m not moving the door as the knock on consequences are beyond where I wish to go.
the wave deflector with Sven, I know he’s the wrong size, 1/76 on a 1/72 craft, and he’s a long way from home being one of Erwin’s men.
you may have noticed I’m not using the kit porthole glazing, I’m using PVA glue instead, it dries clear and fills the porthole perfectly. here are the deck portholes with a torch shining light behind them to check for clarity and fill.
cleaning up and adding pe to the bulkhead just to bling it up a little, those huge moulded on steps had to go, the pe one’s look more in scale
on the subject of armaments, the kit gun needed an update, or an uprate, and alternative part left over from the S100 was this twenty mil, along with a PE shield.
looks far better than the one in the airfix kit, and as they were constantly up gunning the real boats it sits right with me.
portholes made from PVA glue.
the larger portholes in the port and starboard sides of the stern deckhouse
the gun bandstand that overhangs here needs angled gussets cut from plasticard and fitted here as the kit has none.
Great build. Looking forward to see it completed.
And i’m glad this thread started. i’m starting on some of the 1/35 fast boats and i could have sworn i’d seen the vosper MTB but couldnt for the life of me find the one i was thinking of. And there it is on this thread in 1/72 scale pmsl
